Makeup under mask

Published

I'm looking for a good medium to full coverage foundation that will stay put under a mask all day. Before people jump on me for being vain, I have a skin condition that I would like to keep covered. Patients and families will see me without a mask, and we all know appearance is important in making a positive impression. Plus I just feel better about myself that way. Right now I use clinique a stay-matte but it's gone after awhile under a mask.

Not sure what skin condition you have or the severity of symptoms, but the makeup that immediately came to mind is a line called DermaBlend. It is specifically for superior coverage of things such as skin conditions, tattoos, etc. Generally, it is much too heavy for normal use but great when full coverage is needed.

Stop in your nearest Ulta or Sephora and ask the makeup artist to apply it on you so you can see if it meets your needs before purchasing (it's not cheap). They can also recommend other products that may work for your skin type and preferences.

Never feel vain about wanting to look your best :) We all feel better about ourselves when we put the time and effort into looking nice. It boosts our confidence and leaves us feeling put-together, polished and ready to take on the day!

Added: Find and purchase a good quality setting powder to apply over your foundation. It will help to prevent it from rubbing or wearing off.

Have you tried adding a primer to your routine? My face powder tends to come off and appear shiny, also just under my normal oily sweaty conditions.

I started using eye makeup primer a few months ago and it totally helps my eye make up to stick.

From what I understand, there are primers available for your whole face.

I ditto what the op said: never feel bad about wanting to put your best professional face forward at work!

Estée Lauder makes a full coverage foundation that's been around for a long time. It has a cult following......I believe it is called maximum cover. It comes in a tube, there aren't a lot of colors but if you can find one that works for you it provides fantastic coverage. Good luck!

I've tried dermablend but they don't have a color that matches my skin. I do use their concealer for under my eyes but when I've tried it on my face it rubs right off. I have oily skin so that might be why.

I've tried a primer from clinique that didn't work but I've got some samples of other brands to try. I will definitely look into Estée lauder. I've seen MAC listed before too.

I appreciate the understanding. When this has been asked in other groups, it's earned a lot of nasty comments about how we should stop being so vain, and we should be thinking about the patient not ourselves. But like I said before, I want to make a positive impression without drawing attention to anything unrelated to their care!

I make no apologies for being a makeup queen! In fact, I do all the makeup application for my daughters' and their friends for all dances and special occasions. I love it! Used to be a "beauty advisor" in my 20s for a couple of department store brands.

We shouldn't feel bad about being girly or wanting to put our best foot (or face) forward. It doesn't make a nurse any less competent or caring😉

I second the primer suggestion. That and a setting/finishing powder would really help, in addition to a setting spray. Go to Sephora and ask them for help. They will match your foundation, hook you up with a primer, and anything else you may need. They also give free samples so you don't have to keep buying and returning stuff. Sephora's return policy is awesome, but getting free samples is such a time saver!

For primers, Hourglass and Dr. Feelgood by Benefit are two of my favorites. Hourglass makes one for oily skin. Dr. Feelgood also mattifies, and helps minimize pores and fine lines. MAC's Prep and Prime Skin is fantastic too, available at their website and Macy's, Nordstrom. The former can be found at Sephora.

Foundations can make a big difference too. When you choose one, try to use a cream or stick. That type has better staying power d/t how it's made. Liquid and tinted moisturizers are worthless for coverage too. MAC's Pro Longwear foundation is good. Kat Von D, Bobbi Brown, Make Up Forever's Mat Velvet (although a liquid, it's thicker than most and has great staying power), and Cover FX are equally excellent brands.

Lastly, set your face with a finishing powder. MAC has great ones, but all high-end brands are about the same efficacy-wise imo. Finally, you can set your entire look with a few sprays of a setting spray. Urban Decay's All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray is my favorite, MAC's Fix Plus is awesome too, and it smells so nice!

For oiliness, try using a moisturizer for oily skin. Murad makes a great one. That will help keep the oil down as well, and thus improve your staying power.

I love makeup and looking nice, even if it's just for work. I had cystic acne very badly and my face is quite scarred, so I totally understand where you're coming from. Good luck!

Maybe try reading some of the make-up reviews on Amazon, there are so many. Then, getting samples of the make-ups you want to try?

I just did a search with the phrase "all day make-up" and a lot of things came up. I never knew there were such things as "make-up extender" sprays, but after doing this search, I do.

Best of luck to you!

Agreed with Estée Lauder double wear foundation. Also MAC Studio Sculpt or Makeup Forever HD. If you're looking for drugstore options I love the L'oreal infallible line.

Make sure to wear a primer if you want it to last all shift long!

Sephora just recently released this stuff by Cover FX called Custom Cover Drops, it's basically pure color pigment that you blend with your favorite primer or moisturizer and you can actually create your own level of coverage. I highly recommend it, it stays on all day and like I said you can adjust the amount of coverage you want. I'm kind of a Sephora and Ulta junkie  You can go to any Sephora and have them color match you and get a sample of it. The sample will last you for a couple weeks so you can decide if you like it before you spend $45. Hope this helps!!

I second (or third!) the recommendation for the Mac studio fix line; their powder has excellent coverage as well. Armani luminous silk foundation is absolutely amazing and absolutely budge-proof with even a basic primer underneath. I use Dior's mattifying primer and I love it. personally reacted to Hourglass, even though their products are beautiful.

The Armani foundation is expensive, $60 for a large bottle at Nordstrom, but lasts me for well over a year since a little goes a long, long way. I use one pump on the back of my hand and apply it with a stippling brush, finishing off with the heavy duty MAC concealer on bad areas, using a concealer brush. The Dior primer is $42 at Sephora but I find it really improves my skin overall and I have severe scarring and cystic acne issues. I previously used make up forever and liked it as well. If you have a yellow undertone to your skin or tend to use more yellow toned shades, Nars foundations are excellent. They're just too yellow for me. I'm extremely fair, with scars, redness and acne, so I get wanting to look as polished as possible at work. I work in the OR and find that using the dye-free masks helps prevent some breakout and perspiration issues on my face, even when I'm handling the physical parts of my job. Best wishes to you!

Use the best primer for your skin type to help extend wear. Use long-lasting or waterproof formulas--visit your Sephora/Ulta/Nordstroms for recommendations as to brands. Don't apply too much foundation because the more you have on, the more you have to move around. After applying foundation, let it set for a couple of minutes. Then blot with blotting papers and lightly set with powder. Optional: use a setting spray...they never worked for me, but they may work for you.

The Cover FX drops are nifty--I use that mixed with Smashbox primer and it provides good coverage and lasts all day.
