LVN Certifications

Ok, so there was a topic I commented on a few weeks ago and I forgot the name of it. Anyways, one of the members on this site messaged me on facebook and asked if I knew what certifications an LVN could test for. I have put together the following list. As far as I could tell during my research, they are all legit. So to all of my fellow LVN/LPN colleagues, I hope you find the list interesting!!

national federation of licensed practical nurses - IV Therapy and Gerontology

developmental disabilities nurses association - Developmental Disabilities (DDS)

prepared childbirth educators, inc. - Clinical Labor support Specialist (CCLSS)

prepared childbirth educators, inc. - Certified Labor Doula (CD)

prepared childbirth educators, inc. - Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC)

prepared childbirth educators, inc. - Certified Prenatal/Postnatal Fitness Instructor

The International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) certificate is offered by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE)

(http://americas.iblce.org/announcing-future-requirements) According to the IBLCE, "Beginning in 2012, all first-time candidates [to be certified as a lactation consultant] will be required to have completed the following education and clinical practice experience prior to applying for the exam: 90 hours of pre-exam education in human lactation and breastfeeding and ...be a [LVN]...Or have completed both of the following general education requirements:8 general education courses of one semester, or equivalent, in length [and] 6 additional continuing education subjects, and Clinical breastfeeding practice hours."

    It's relative. The certifications that require a validated work experience often carry more weight (like many of the specialties available for RNs like CEN CCRN etc). If the certification demonstrates your competence and expertise it will mean much more than say a new grad without experience taking a bunch of classes.

    If you have LTC experience and take one of the LTC/subacute certifications it will have significance and perhaps give you an edge while applying as it shows not only your competence/education but also your dedicated interest in expanding your credentials.

    When I went through PN school (3000 years ago), we had to take a NAPNES class outside of the school, and get a NAPNES 'card', or we could not pass meds upon graduation- meaning the LPN license would have been useless. Is this the same today, that as an LPN you need a credential to pass meds?

    Not when I graduated. No one in my class had/has a NAPNES card in pharmacology to work. Not sure my employer even knows what NAPNES is. ;) my one employer stated its a competency covered in nursing school.

    They do require additional education/credentials for LPNs to do trach/vent, IV & phlebotomy.

    I tried for the last 2 weeks to get in touch with NAPNES for my pharmacology certification but is impossible. If you pay them you might have the chance not to get the certification because the id and pass they send you doesn't work and if you call them you get a voicemail. They never answer to any emails or phone calls. I just waisted $100 for nothing. Do it at your own risk. THey have the CASTLE phone number on their website and if you call them they give you the NAPNES phone number. It is pointless. I regret that I did that with them.

    Do a chargeback through your bank to get the money back. "services not rendered"
