To make a long story short I was in a 2 year nursing ADN program. Our math competency exam scores needed to be a 76% to pass and go on into the next rotation. After the first year of the program the college raised the math exam passing score to 90%, however, because my cohort had already completed our first year we were told we were still going to be held to the 76% to pass. This was not communicated down from the nursing department to our lead faculty. Needless to say I scored an 85% and was removed from the program. I appealed to the nursing department and was granted my appeal because it was a miscommunication between the department heads and faculty. However I had to sit out the rest of the 8 week rotation and rejoin my cohort during the last 8 weeks of the semester. During the next semester (spring) I was placed with a new cohort because I was now 8 weeks behind my original cohort. This new cohort was the first batch of students that had to get the 90% to pass the math exam, but I still only had to get the 76% which again was not communicated to my pediatric rotation instructor. I again received a 86% and was removed again out of the program. I appealed again and again won the appeal. This time was different because all though I missed over a week of the program they allowed me back into that rotation. Anyone how has been in a nursing program knows that missing more than a week is the equivalent to missing a month or more of it. Needless to say I had to catch up on 2 exams, write a 15 page paper, complete my clinical paper work and stay current on the new material being taught. This of course proved to be a suicide mission from hell! I wasn't doing well at all I was struggling to keep my grades above at least a 2.5. I emailed my instructor to ask what I had to get on my final exam and she responded that I needed to get an 83%. Well on the day of my final exam I scored and 86% and was then told by my instructor that she had made a mistake and I needed more then an 83%. I failed my pediatric rotation by 2/10ths of a point! This was by far one of the worst days of my life! I tried to appeal it again to the board and this time I lost. Now my problem is that I was 16 weeks away from my RN and I can't seem to find any college to let me in because I "failed" out f a nursing program. All of these colleges tell me that I have to wait 5 years before I can apply to their programs. When I ask them if I can apply as an LPN into the RN program they still say "no" because I failed out of another colleges nursing program. Please has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know of any programs that will help let me finish out where I left off? I have 2 kids and I am not in the position to just pack up and leave to another state to try and finish. I just feel lost

Welcome to Allnurses.com!
In which state are you located? Respondents need to know where you are located since you indicate you cannot relocate to another state to finish what you started. Good luck to you!
Oops sorry I forgot to say I live in Lansing Michigan.

I can't believe they kicked you out of the whole program. In my program, if you fail a class thats all you fail is a class. Worse comes to worse you just take the class over again, simple as that.

The rules for nursing school have gotten ridiculous. The more I'm in school, the more I'm hating this whole nursing thing. (I had a bad day at clinical today and I think I'm just venting)
I don't see why you can't get into a private school At least. They usually don't care if you failed another program.

I think the 5-year situation they are telling you is BS! By that time, you will need to repeat A&P and Microbiology, if not before. Lots, if not all, of colleges are requiring that those sciences be repeated if they are older than 5 years in order to get into an ASN program. Review the dates of your sciences and continue your search but don't wait too long before looking into other options like considering an online program, (either LPN-RN or LPN-BSN), before your sciences expire. Good luck!
