Low GPA and BSN Programs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I want to give you all some background to my situation and maybe I can get some advice as I feel lost right now.

Ever since I started looking into college my senior year of high school I wanted to become a nurse. Somewhere along the mess of information I got from multiple schools, my interests were pulled towards journalism, social work, OT, PT, etc. I did not know much about college and really did not have a lot of guidance in where to apply and what to search for so I started school as "undecided". I would always go back to nursing as my choice in career and even talked to a health advisor at my college. This school did not have all the pre-reqs I needed and after dealing with a few personal issues, I decided to transfer schools. I had received a low gpa by the end of my first and thought I would not be able to transfer to a school with a nursing program (my dream school was Binghamton) and so I became discouraged and applied to a school without the program but knew I would be accepted in and decided on getting my BSN after my second year.

My new school did have the pre-reqs I needed and so I thought i would succeed there and continue onto getting my BSN. Within the first semester here I was constantly traveling back home as a family member was sick and unfortunately passed that november. My gpa was a 1.76 that semester. I was on academic probation the next semester and was a able to raise it to 1.93 despite working and getting extra help in my general bio course. that summer I took one course and raised it to a 2.01. As I was behind on courses (not all my courses transferred) I took six classes both fall and spring semester of my senior year and a class in the winter. At this point, I cared about passing just enough to graduate in time. I graduated with a 2.49 this May.

I had spoken with the pre-health advisor at my school and was only told to finish my pre-reqs and apply to Hunter or NYU. As I have checked their requirements i believe I do not meet them since some of my pre-reqs are Cs and they accept Bs as their minimum. I did not do so well in my general bio courses, therefore, i thought it was best to take my science courses at a CUNY school.

I have searched for schools specifically CUNYs (as i have been told i can only apply for loans since i received my first bachelors. I believe to take my pre-reqs I would have to apply as a non-degree student (?). I am missing my General Chem courses and Anatomy and Phsy; just about all my science courses that require labs.

I hope someone can give me some advice as I am feeling a little discouraged. I have always excelled at school and so am disappointed in my college academics. I truly wish I could start over but am trying to find my way in succeeding in a career in nursing as ive always wanted. I am continuing my research and hope to start classes by Fall, the latest.

I graduated with a non nursing degree with 2.27 from a cuny school but my pre reqs science g.p.a was a 3.8. I was rejected from lots of schools, I relocated out of NY to follow my nursing dream and I just started an accelerated adn program (14 months). NYC is extremely competitive when it comes to nursing with your grades I highly suggest you do a lpn and transfer to a bsn program after. It may seem daunting but between doing pre reqs, waiting for the time slots to apply, possible getting rejected, and applying again; you might as well go for your lpn. I always regret not going this route, by time i graduate it will be a 4 year journey from beginning my pre reqs to finishing with an ADN. Another option, as you stated before is getting a clean slate at a 4 yr school, doing pre reqs, then apply to their program but thats risky.

Yes, I think the PP is right, do LPN and then do the bridge. Hunter SON is almost impossible to get into, even with a 4.0. Private schools might be an option.

I know of a community college that would accept you 100% with those grades in the Tri-State area. The downside? Theres a 2 year wait list right now. PM me if youre interested.
