lovenox

does anyone know if it is okay to put lovenox into another syringe if you have to give a dose that entails giving the patient 2 shots at the same time. I have been told it is okay by one person from the pharmacy and told absolutely no by another.

Just wondering because when the patient is getting it BID that makes 4 shots a day. You kind of run out of spots to give it.

Ok....are you talking about mixing Lovenox with another drug in order to give it?

Was the person you talked to a pharmacist?

What is the other shot you're giving?

Personally, I wouldn't do it, but that's just me. If you feel comfortable doing it and you've been told by a pharmacist that you can...Sure....

Yikes - how much is this pt getting? I would read the package info, or contact the company. Also, I might be concerned about the actual quantity - more than 1 cc is not usually given SQ.

Double check the dose!

I would just keep rotating sites, using the two syringes. You aren't supposed to give more than 1cc subq and usually regardless of the dose they are 1cc. Your hospital doesn't carry different doses of Lovenox? I've had to remove a little from a syringe before but never had to give two, however, if so I would just do one in the right arm and right abdomen in the am and left arm left abdomen in the pm, something consistant like that. Unless they had abdominal surgery in which case I would do arm and leg.

I've had to give 2 shots of Lovenox in my ER due to the patient's size (since Lovenox dosage is weight based) If I remember correctly the Lovenox we carry only goes up to 100mg in a single syringe

yea lovenox only goes up to 100mg (which is the black labeled syringe). I've had large patients with whom i had to give 2 shots of lovenox because they required more than 100mg of it. I would not even think to put it into another syringe. I just give them 2 sticks and besides its a small needle it's not like we're darting people with 16G IVs or something here.

You shouldnt fiddle with lovenox like that, at least the ones in the premixxed SQ syringes because they have the air bubble which "seals" the lovenox SQ shot in the patient after you have given it..

op, please be aware that the administration site is lateral abdominal area. regardless of drains and colostomys and what not i try my hardest to utilize the abdominal area.

There are also 125mg and 150mg prefilled syringes as well but not all facilities carry them.
