I spent quite a bit of time researching stethoscopes before I received a Master Classic as a b-day gift from hubby. Of course, now that the research is done, I ran across this comparison chart: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/allheart/littmannspecs.pdf
I was happy to choose a lower cost scope, but my husband decided to get this one d/t my hearing deficit. Just hope it doesn't come up missing in school! Hope this helps.

I recommend getting it engraved and not lending it to anyone- no matter what! I broke my own rule the other day and the resident almost ended up walking off with my stethoscope!

Mine's engraved with my name, AND it's hot pink so it's easier to spot.

i was recommended at my nursing school to get the master cardiologist scope. my husband bought it for me. i love it. sometimes i cannot belive what i'm hearing.
i noticed that one of the docs that i work with, had a regular littman, but one day after having mine for 6 months, i noticed he had bought the same one. it never leaves his neck.
i am the same way.
most of the docs see, that i have such a awsome scope, and they want to use it, but i always look them sqaure in the eyes and tell them, "i want it back when you are done" and so far they return it, everytime; they know what it means to me and my patients.
my instructor /director said, "this scope is only for the serious minded nurses, esp. if you have a hearing deficit.
I did get mine engraved and chose the most obnoxious color they offered (raspberry) to make it easier to spot. I also bought a sleeve for it. Now if I can only learn to use it:idea:. First semester of clinicals start in one week!

I bought the Lightweight Select for about fifty bucks halfway through nursing school, thinking "it's a Littman, must be great". Wrong. Couldn't hear much at all with it! Went back to my cheapie Sprague at that point.
For graduation, I also did my homework and decided the Master Cardiology was the best, and I wanted the best, so....it's now mine! :)
Interesting chart; surprising that 3M would give one of their OWN scopes a rating of 6/10!
I tell you, I am amazed at what I can hear with that thing, and under what conditions. More than once I have handed it over to a doc (while I stood at bedside) and have always had to say "Umm...excuse me, but....?" while pointing at the scope they were slipping out the door with! Nope, that doesn't leave my sight :)

What about the lengths? I just checked it out and would prefer to buy something other than black, just so it would stand out more, harder to "lose". I'm specifically looking at the Littman Master Cardiology, which comes in 22" for black only. All other colors are 27". The stethoscope I have now is 22", and I'm fairly short (5'3")...would an extra 5" make a difference? Get in the way?
