Ocean county hospitals have started layoffs to some RN'S, social workers, case managers and lots of there old LPN's. Hospitals like community medical center, kimball, southern ocean county and deborah heart and lung to name a few. Wondering if this is going on anywhere else in nj. I hope these hospitals don't completely shut down. None of these hospitals are making any money and they are in debt big-time due to poor economy and medicare reimbursements. Hope the economy turnarounds soon or healthcare is going to face a huge crisis!!!!

I work at Community and we spent a week waiting for the axe to fall. Luckly, they left the LPNs in the ER alone, but we saw a lot of great people lose their jobs. I'm taking an agency job in case the axe does fall. Corzine doesn't care, he has so much money he doesn't even begin to understand what the rest of of go thru, living paycheck to payched.

Is it true that the Orthodox Jewish Community is attempting to buy Kimball Medical Center? Will there be jobs when I graduate nursing school with so many layoffs?
I am just trying to enter Ocean County Colleges One Day Per Week Nursing program. Is it better to go for a BSN now rather than get the AAS first and stay in school until the job market improves? I am very confused, wasn't there a nursing shortage in Ocean County?
Sorry for so many questions,
Thanks for your help,

I'm not sure we can lay the entire blame at Governor Corzine's feet. Hospital closings and layoffs are the result of a bunch of factors, just one of which is reduced state funding.

Wow, I wish you all the best of luck. I am a Jan. 08 graduate and decided to move out of NJ to WV with my career change. After reading all of this, I am kind of glad I did. Beside these job issues, it's just wayyy to expensive to live in that state anymore.
Best of luck to all of you and I hope most if not all of you keep your jobs.

2bTrauma, were you a lifelong resident of NJ? How was it at first to move from NJ to WV? Do you live in a rural or more urban area? How do you like WV overall? Sorry about all the questions... my husband and have been thinking about whether we want to stay in NJ once I've completed my schooling, and I'm always looking at comments on other states. Since you did the NJ-to-WV move, I thought I'd bombard you with questions! :)
P.S. Are people more POLITE than my fellow New Jerseyites, and do they move at a pace something less than the speed of sound? LOL!

AtomicWoman-
Yes, I was a lifelong NJ resident, born and raised, LOL. The move was and still is wonderful. I am definitely in a rural area, LOVE IT!! No more people looking in your windows. I can walk around completely naked (hahaha) if I wanted to and wouldn't have to worry about anyone ever seeing me, LOL.
And, on the POLITE issue, people are extremely friendly, and wave even if they don't know you (no more middle finger, lol). Most don't move that slow either.
So far, the only issue I have is that we have to drive 40-50 miles to get to one of the "big" towns in VA for shopping such as malls, restaurants, etc. I do have a super Walmart about 20 miles away, but that's it. There are plently of little, local places to run into for bread and milk type of things. I actually drive 1 hour to get to work, but it's only 3 days a week, so it is definitely managable.
I will be happy to answer any more questions you have, just reply of send me a private message.
Take Care!!

Glad to hear the folks are more friendly there! What kind of facility do you work in? A hospital, or something else? I'm sure the pay is different in NJ, but is it decent for the area you work in? (Please pardon my questions!!! I'm not asking for specifics, just your general sense about the pay where you are.)
Some days, I have just about had it up to here with NJ and its cost of living. And being in the middle of nowhere sounds good to me these days. I live in a semi-rural area of NJ now, but grew up in good old, crowded Bergen County. :)
Thanks again!
I work in a hospital, very large one. The pay is less, but so is the cost of living. Cost of living is much cheaper than NJ, so I actually think the pay is high for the cost of living. Compared to what my friends are making in NJ, I make about 3.00 hr less, so take in to considertion the cost of living, and I am much, much better off with less money compared to what I pay for life's neccessities.
Thanks for that info! Do you own a home or do you know how property taxes compare to NJ? They sure are killer taxes here in NJ! :)
