kids and fevers....

growing kiddo #3 here and have gone back and forth on the usefullness of fevers..if it's 101, I do.

what do you think about letting them ride for a while so that thier natural immune resonses can work a bit. I am not about letting them get uncomfortable, especially as they get bigger and the effects of a fever seem more pronounced.

So, what do you think....nurses, moms and dads?

Well speaking as a mom, i treat fevers greater than 100, mainly due to comfort not the fever itself. my kids are miserable when they get to 100 or above. i do believe in letting a fever less than 101 ride IF they are tolerating it well, because fever isn't a bad thing. it is your body fighting the infection or whatever and natural response to anything like that is always better IMO. I guess it just depends on the kid. FWIW, i also treat each kid differently. My 3 year old does MUCH better with fever and Motrin, but my 18 mth old does WAY better with Tylenol. Also i try to do the nursing measures, tepid baths, cool washclothes, juice/gatorade, that sort of thing. BUt greater than101 they get treated for SURE.

I agree with you too....101 would be about where i would start medicating. This speaking as a mom since I am only a student.

I only look at the fever just to keep track of what's going on. I don't medicate unless the child is uncomfortable, or the temp is 102.8 or higher. Works well for us--my kids are rarely sick, and usually are able to get over illnesses very quickly.

How old is the kid??? Didn't think to ask that and it could be important!
