Has anyone heard of a nurse becoming a doctor? How long were they a nurse before becoming a doctor? Which is more rewarding.

I worked with an anethesiologist that was first a nurse, then a CRNA and now an M.D. I don't know how long she was in each profession. She is an excellent Doctor though. I think it sure must have been a long road to go though. :)

One of the ER docs I work with started out as a secretary, then a tech, became a nurse, then a PA, then an MD. He's a decent doc...very quick which sometimes ticks pts off, but good for us b/c he can move people in and out. He's a good schmoozer too, hehe.
As for which is more rewarding...it just depends on the individual person, and what you want out of your career and life in general.

My MD, was a nurse, then Nurse practitioner and went to med school and became a doctor. She is wonderful. When I told her I was going to be a nurse she gave me a hug and told me it was a great choice. :)

I work with an anesthesiologist and an ob, both were RN's first. They are both awesome!!! They both say though that nursing provided them a lot more time with the patients, that they wished they had now. I think it's a good idea for md's to work as RNs. Gives them and idea of what all we do. Makes them better MDs, IMO.
