I have been debating if I shoudl get a LPN and then continue for my RN or should I just go straight for my RN? Does anyone have any suggestions?

It all depends on your circumstances. As for me I'm doing my LPN first and then doing the bridge program, LPN-RN. And anyone who yells at me and says " Why don't you just go straight for the RN ?" I tell them sure, I'll go straight for my RN, only if you are willing to pay my bills while in school for another year ! That response usually shuts people up. Many times people will down you for becoming " just an LPN first" so its best to be prepared for the remarks you may get. As for me I think its a great Idea. I'll be able to work as a nurse and gain experience while in school for my RN. I'll also be able to support myself financially as well. I know of people who went straight for the RN, they failed in their second year, and had nothing to fall back on. Just something to think about. Good luck.

Thank you for the advice, I have the feel exactly as you do about the LPN and being able to work while I go for my RN, and having something to fall back on. The only thing is I am able to go full time to school, my family is going to help me and pay for my school so I can go full time. That is why I am not sure if I should just get it done with in 2 years or do the bridge :banghead: What is a girl to do?!?

If your longterm goal is to be an RN, another option is to look into schools with a "ladder" program. I'm not exactly sure how it works but the concept is that you are eligible for a CNA license after completion of the first semester and eligible to take your LPN boards after the second.

i would take advantage of your situation and go to school full time. your family is giving you this great opportunity. that way, you can focus and get good grades!

i am starting in january, i am all signed up and ready to go. unfortunately, i am married and i have to work full time, so i am starting with four classes and taking it one step at a time. just hoping i don't get too overwhelmed.

now if only i could find a scholarship...

My school has the exact program ! After our first semester we became CNA's after the second semester we can sit for our LPN license. There are no breaks ! MY longterm goal is to be an RN, so the ladder program works perfect for me ! :yeah:

I'm doing Lpn then bridging to RN simply because it will get me there faster. There was no waiting list for LPN, but there is a 1-year list for RN's. So, even though I'll take an extra semester of school, I will be done sooner that if I had waited to get into the RN program.
