Job Shadowing

What is the purpose of shadowing? Are you thinking about going into nursing? Are you considering a certain specialty? I know that in my unit, there hasn't been anyone come in and shadow unless they are in nursing school. That is because of security reasons and HIPPPA.

Agreed. I know this would not be acceptable on my unit. Maybe if you were an EMT thinking about going the nursing route.

Yes, I am actually already applied to nursing school & just waiting to get in. I've spoke with numerous nurses & nursing students but just felt that being able to actually shadow someone would be beneficial as well. I understand there may be security reasons and HIPPPA restrictions but was hoping there may be someone her ein the Phoenix area that could accomodate it

I know we wouldn't allow it at my hospital. Don't know how you'd get around the privacy stuff. Perhaps if you volunteer, it might get you into the hospital setting and at the bedside. Then you could ask the staff lots of questions. That is what I did before getting into NS. At least I got some bedside experience (how to make the bedrails go up and down, how to turn off call lights, etc.) which is all very real stuff that no one shows you

thanks bug out - you don't think there will be any problems with security reasons or hipppa restrictions? where do you work in mesa?

Well we can get consent from my patients and work you in as a volunteer.

Now that being said I am not going to show you what I am charting or let you sneak a peek into someone's H&P nor give you the keys to the med cart but I don't see there being too much of a problem with observation.

All this of course will need prior approval from the "big boss lady" but I do not forsee her denying the request.

The nurse recruiters from county told us that they do a shadowing program if you are interested in nursing. You may want to contact them in the human resources office.

Their volunteers get to do a lot and see a lot. If you are interested in nursing, you should definitely check out volunteering there. It isn't the fanciest facility, but it provides one of the best learning experiences that I have had so far. If I hadn't gotten hired by PCH, I would have really wanted to start off there.
