IV therapy and basic CPR

Published

i just passed the june 2006 NLE and i want to ask a few questions.

can anybody help me find any institution that offers these training besides philippine heart center (for IV) and red cross (for CPR) coz my main problem with the said institutions is that PHC offers IV training on October ( I still have to check Red Cross on when they schedule CPR training)...

i have an offer from a hospital which would start next week and i'm thinking if i should take it coz i'm still applying for NCLEX (just waiting for my license and i doubt if i would have enough time to do so when i already have a job)

and i want to know if it wise to have the trainings first before applying for a job? coz if i choose having the trainings first, i can be stuck at home doing nothing coz of the schedules of the training...

thanks in advance...

You should ask the local hospital 1st because the bigger hospitals does their own basic trainings or if they don't... ask w/c 3rd party training they recognize.

If you are applying for NCLEX, it is my humble opinion that you concentrate on reviewing for the NCLEX exam while everything is still fresh on your mind. Plus you may pick up bad practices during your job w/c may confuse you on answering Q's from foreign exams because everything should be answered based on theoreticals and what is on the book and not what is being practiced. Trainings done locally are also not recognized in the U.S. if your goal is to be employed in the U.S.

I know a lot of RNs that finds it hard to pass either the CGFNS exam or NCLEX because they don't want to give up their jobs. They maybe getting years of experience alright but what good is it if it's also been years and still cannot pass any exam. The batting average of those passing any foreign qualifying exams the 1st time around for those who keeps a full-time job while reviewing is low.

Most often than not they are forced to resign as soon as they realize that they cannot multi-task.

thanks for the reply lawrence!

so basically you mean to say that eventhough i've completed an IV therapy and basic life support training, there's a chance that hospitals im planning to apply for wont recognize these trainings? ouch.

anyway, i'm still waiting for my fingerprint card and license so i can fill up my application for California NCLEX. one more thing, in the application form, i read that i should disclose a social security number, which i dont have, and i dont how to have one coz im residing here in the philippines.

anyway, i was supposed to be reviewing for NLCEX but the review i'm supposed to attend to will end in november. i dont think i will receive my ATT by that time so it would be probably a waste of time and money if i took the review today and have the exam next year (i'm calculating that it would take that long to receive my ATT) just my opinion though.

and the reason why i'm planning to work first is that i'll just be waiting for my ATT and the minute i receive my ATT, i'll resign and will take a review since the ATT is good for one year right? by then, i will have enough time. and i dont want to spend my time at home doing nothing while waiting for the ATT, coz i've got my family that would depend on me and expecting foe me to have a job as soon as possible..

anyway, thanks again for the reply. i hope more people would reply... :)

Hi there nei_ph! I guess we have the same plans. I had just passed also the local boards last June and I am now on my way of processing my application for the California Licensure Exam. I had just my fingerprint done at NBI Recto last Friday and I will be going to my school tomorrow for the transcript, etc.

I think we just leave the Social Security Number blank. That was the advice of my friend who had just passed the NCLEX RN California taken in HK.

I am also planning of working as a nurse now but as Lawrence told us, I have to rethink about this matter. By the way, I am working as a medical transcriptionist for 2 years now and I am pretty much worried of the low-salaries that Filipino nurses are earning now.

I am wishing all the lucks for us both.

thanks for the reply lawrence!

It really depends on the hospital that is why it is best to ask them before presuming anything. The bigger hospitals usually provide their own basic trainings because they have the resources to do so. Why waste your money if they will provide it for free. ER consultants employed by the bigger hospitals can easily conduct basic CPR and IV theraphy isn't a must before being employed for some (teaching hospitals) because it's usually done along the way or at the start of the job.

Smaller hospitals usually will let certain 3rd party do the basic trainings because they don't have the resources or facilities to do it on their own.

It really depends on the hospital on what they want.

Goodluck.

congratulations then, jayjuanich!

i'm still waiting for my fingerprint card to arrive as i only requested for it two days ago, i think. right now, i'm reading the CA NCLEX application form and the more i try to read it the more confusing it gets. Hahaha! so far, i'm planning to print it within this week and fill up anything that i can.

anyway, it would be good if u can update me on what's happening with your application. that way, i would feel that i wont be the only one whose having these problems...

more power! and good luck! :)

thanks again lawrence! ur such a great help! somehow clreared some questions in my mind. i guess i wont apply for the trainings then. i'l just concentrate on applying for my NCLEX applicationthis august.

by the way, i'm still planning to start working by october (i'l be applying 3rd week of september after my trip to palawan) since i don't have the luxury to sit at home and do nothing as i need to start earning soon.

i really want to follow ur advice of concentrating first for the NCLEX application but i think it would take time for it to be approved so i guess why not work while waiting?

hoping to read more of your thoughts! thanks!

Umm, pa comment lang po kahit nursing student pa lang po.. If you could find a BLS training that is not just accredited by Red Cross, much better. Di ko alam kung kanino ko narinig na St. Luke's Hospital and Asian Hospital and Medical Center is offering BLS training that is accredited in the US. Pero di ko po sure kung totoo nga po yun, pero wala naman pong masama kung mag check di ba.. Goodluck po sa mga mag take ng NCLEX!!!

Question, after graduation di ba pwede na po kayong kumuha ng mga seminars except for the IV therapy which I think kailangan ng license..
