Is it worth relocating?

HI everyone. I currently reside and work at Suny Upstate, syracuse. Good hospital, pay is competitive (for other hospitals in this area) and benefits are great. We're also union. My husband and I are considering moving to NYC, somewhere near Westchester. Pay is much higher in NYC and I anticipate at least doubling my base pay.

My dilemma. Suny Downstate (university hosp of brooklyn) is affiliated and If I were to apply and accept a position there it would just be a transfer. We really don't want to live in brooklyn and i'm struggling because I don't want to give up my great benefits/union but I hate upstate ny.

Any advice? Does anyone know of the area for suny downstate? Is the hospital a good place to work ? Thanks in advance !

Not too long ago they furloughed nurses so I'm surprised to hear they are hiring. Facilities are in bad condition, parking is very tough in the neighborhood and the hospital is racked with financial problems - I personally would not want to work there. If you are living in Westchester I'd consider working at a Presbyterian affiliate up there before traveling all the way to Downstaet.

Thanks so much for that information! I have been trying to find more information about Suny downstate but their website doesn't offer up much employer/employee wise. I did see they were hiring cardiac ICU nurses though. I guess i'll have to do more research on my current benefits/union/pension plan to see what is comparable downstate.

Stony Brook would be your next option in terms of a transfer with your benefits, I do know they are usually hiring and they are also expanding their facilities due for completion next year. Not sure though if moving to the eastern Long Island area would be part of your plans. The salary would definitely be an increase over Upstate.

I spent a day in the cardiac ICU and found management to be...challenging.

I'm in vice versa situation - in Brooklyn, but would have to move upstate if accepted as a new grad ICU nurse. Trying to formulate an answer to quell the fear of "lots of downstate ppl move back after a year of experience..."

I want to sound genuinely interested in staying upstate as long as I can, but life's circumstances may make it harder to do so... any thoughts on what you would say that doesn't promise too much or promise too little?
