Is nursing the right path for me?

Published

I am thinking about studying nursing however I am a bit worried that some nursing departments aren't for me. Do all nurses need to be able to work in any department or can you choose the area you would like to work in? Sorry if this seems like a silly question.

Welcome to AN.com, kimfahmi!

Nursing programs have education/clinicals in nearly all the specialties, but one can choose their area of expertise, to some degree.

Do a search located at the bottom of the forum page, for this is an oft asked question.

Best wishes, kimfahmi!

In school, you will be required to do rotations through the different specialties. You will go through med-surg, OB/postpartum, psych, peds, critical care/ICU, possibly OR. Once you graduate though, you can choose which area to work/specialize in. Granted, based on job availability, you may have to work med-surg for a while before picking your specialty, it just depends on the nursing climate and job openings in your area upon graduation. Thankfully, I am in an area that is underserved and I am going straight to my specialty of choice. Good luck!

Nurses do not need to be able to work in any/every department...

I have never worked in pediatrics, critical care, emergency department, med/surg, or any acute care hospital specialties.

As a previous poster mentioned, state boards of nursing require nursing students to rotate through certain areas. However, once you complete school, you can avoid these areas if you wish.
