Is NJ compact or not?

Hello,

Every time I Google if NJ is a compact state it says “partial implementation”. I am a new grad in FL wanting to move back home to NJ. Do they accept compact licenses or not?

The state of New Jersey passed NLC legislation in the Summer of 2019. If you are living in a compact state and have a compact license, you can work in NJ with that license. If you change your legal residence to NJ, you will need to get a NJ license; it will not be compact-yet. Hopefully NJ will fully implement the compact soon (I keep hearing a few months or so, but I don't think anything is official yet). Good luck with your job search.

Oh okay that makes sense, thanks! Do you know if it is difficult to obtain an NJ license? Since I’m planning to move there I’d have to change my legal residence like you stated. I am a new grad like I said so I’m unaware of the process

Under the current NLC, when you relocate to another compact state you can work on your current, out of state compact license while your new license is being processed. As I understand it, and I'm not in NJ, this is what NJ has done with the partial implementation.

Best wishes.

According to Jim Puente at the NCSBN (director of the National Council of the State Boards Of Nursing), NJ will be fully implementing the compact next Spring.

Thanks,

So am I able to work with my compact license while I'm waiting for the license by endorsement to process? I see a lot of applications stating NJ-RN required, so I am just a little confused.

Sorry, I don't know. NJ is the only state that has opted to "partially implement"  the compact, so I am not sure what the rules are for a new New Jersey resident. It may only take a few weeks to get a temporary NJ license. I would check with the NJ BON to be sure.

I emailed NJ BON and this was the reply: I will comment this just in case other people have similar questions

The Board of Nursing has partially implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) in that nurses with active, unencumbered, multi-state licenses issued by NLC members may practice in New Jersey for temporary, travel or telehealth assignments.

New Jersey is not yet issuing multi-state Compact licenses as we are awaiting systems’ upgrades.

If you are moving to New Jersey and will declare NJ as your primary state of residence, you must obtain a New Jersey license.

You may work under your multi-state Compact license while your NJ application is pending.

BIG word of advice - anything 'State of New Jersey' takes time! Lots of time!

That is a ongoing freq complaint here. As a life-long resident of NJ, take my word for it! It will take time.

And we're not even talking covid-induced delays!
