hi everyone, my name is Anson, i live in Salisbury, NC. i'm in my last sem of nursing school. i've been married for 2 years, no kids yet. i'm thinking about psych nursing, but i'm still not sure. i'd like to talk with other RNs in my area. i'm looking at maybe working in the Winston-Salem area.

Welcome to everyone who has posted so far! Seems like a great group. :) A quick question: Has anyone been to the Zoo in Asheboro? I'm thinking of planning a little trip there some long weekend. I absolutely love Zoos, I used to live in Cleveland which had a great one. Just wondering how the NC Zoo is. It's not a far trip, about 100 miles. Have a good week!

Thanks everyone for your support. I really need it from someone right now. The people I work with are not really supportive of me right now because they don't want me to move. I heard from the hospital today and the manager said that the woman who was putting in her resignation had decided not to leave. She has tried to get a position for me in the NICU but does not have one available right now. Apperently they do not have a high turn over rate and she said hopefully something would become available in the next couple of months. I guess it's a good sign that there is not a high turn over rate but my husband and I are ready to go back home. She said she would keep me in mind when a position becomes available, to keep checking back in with her. Any suggestions for how often to check back in with her without bugging the crap out of her. I really want to work in the NICU. Thanks everyone for listening.

Be forewarned:: hospital pay is horrible for a new grad in Winston-Salem. The hospitals there are Wake Forest Baptist Medical University and Forsyth. Good luck.

Hi Everyone!

I just returned from taking my LPN boards. The wait is gonna kill me until I find out if I passed or not. And of course here in NC I can't get the quick results. Anyway, the machine shut off around 85 so I hope that's good. I live right outside of Fayetteville and currently work in Pinehurst as a NAII until I get my license. My goal is to get my RN within the next 1 1/2 if all goes well.

If anyone has helpful advice to give while waiting for my results please please give em'. Hope to get to know you all!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently looking into which nursing schools to apply to in NC. Maybe some of you can help me choose. (Are we allowed to say things about certain schools here?) I have a BS degree in environmental conservation, but have decided to switch to nursing. Right now I'm finishing up the sciences and other pre-requisites. I really want to go to the Chapel Hill accelerated program, but I need a few other options in case I don't get in. Right now I live in Charlotte, which has quite a few different programs to choose from. I've also researched ECU.

Does anyone know--since I already have a BS, does it matter whether I get a diploma, ADN, or BSN? Is there a difference in pay? I want to go on to get my MSN, so I was trying for the BSN. My plan is to start in May 2004 if I get into UNC-CH, otherwise fall 2004. Any advice would be great.

Hi Laura!

I think your best bet is going for the accelerated BSN since you already have a degree. I've heard good things about both UNC Chapel Hill and ECU. Right now I am in an ADN program because there were no BSN schools within driving range. But I will get my BSN online after I graduate. Also, ADN programs tend to have looong waiting lists. In most hospitals, there is no pay difference between ADN and BSN grads. Would have have to work while doing the accelerated BSN? I've heard it can be very time consuming. What MSN path were you thinking about? Let us know how it goes. Have a good weekend!

Hello everyone! I'm relatively new to NC, we've been here about 8 months now. We moved from Kentucky to Winston-Salem at the begining of the year. I started working at the "big" hospital in March and really enjoy it for the most part. People here are very friendly and there are a lot of non-natives in Winston.

Whatnext, there is an accelerated nursing program at Winston-Salem State University that is affiliated with NC Baptist Hospital. I'm not sure if it's a BSN or ADN program, but I've heard it's going pretty well, as all the students are second degree and serious about school.

Does anyone have any info on the graduate programs at UNCG?

What graduate program are you looking at? I really want to go there for CRNA school, but that is a couple of years away. I've talked to some of the admission people there, and they have been very helpful and friendly. Good luck and welcome to North Carolina!

I actually am very interested in CRNA. I think it would be the most challenging profession I could possibly enter. The thing is I'm a little on the fence about the time and commitment that the program requires because I don't feel it would be fair to my family right now.

Lately, I've been thinking about the nurse educator program. I really think I would enjoy teaching and it would afford me the flexibility to stay at the bedside in critical care, as well as spend adequate time with my family. I also think that down the road I could apply to the CRNA as a post-MSN student.

Since there are no ACNP programs close by, and I feel that NPs are grossly underutilized in this area, I'm not too interested in the NP programs.
