Interviewing on PP, Finally!

I've been working in a very busy multisystem critical care unit and realized quickly this unit was not for me. However, by coming on allnurses, I realized most new grads feel this way and was encouraged it would get better over time. Well, it didn't and I continued to feel the burn several months later. I was still determined to stay and be grateful for the experience I was gaining. I was also hoping to stick it out long enough to be eligible for transfer to the Mother/baby unit but I wasn't sure how quickly I would be hired when that day came. To my surprise, out of the blue I get a rare opportunity to interview on the PP (Postpartum) unit!

I'm not terribly nervous but more excited to finally interview for the PP unit. I don't know anything about mother/baby but I will draw on my experience and my enthusiasm to learn about this specialty. Teaching is an important part of this unit and that is a big reason why I was drawn there.

    Thanks! I'll be getting 4 weeks orientation. I think Im going to love it too. Any advice especially since I'm coming from critical care. Was your transition smooth?

    Congrats! I'm a new PP nurse. It's a completely different area. You'll feel like a brand new graduate nurse all over again. Write down every single thing you're learning. It will help you!! And ask all the questions you like.

    My transition from ICU to PP was pretty smooth. The hardest part was learning how to take care of babies. Babies show very subtle signs of distress so honing your assessment on babies is imperative!!!! When in doubt, grab a more experience nurse and ask lots of questions. A year later, and sometimes things still throw me for a loop.

    Having a ICU background will only enhance you on PP. If my mom is C/O of chest pain, I automatically get an EKG instead of waiting for an order. Yes, it could be gas pain but an EKG should always be done if this is the first complaint.

    @prnqday: thanks! I agree that my critical care background will make the transition smooth. I definitely know about CP especially when it's a frequently complaint during change of shift.
