interview for geriatric nurses

Published

Hello, I am a student and for my English course I am doing a paper on the Impact of Baby Boomers on the Nursing Profession/Shortage. For the paper I have to interview nurses, but none of them have gotten back to me so this is sort of my last resort. If you do decide to respond you do not have to leave a name just what kind of medical setting you work in. Thank you.

1. What impact do you feel baby boomers have on nursing shortage?

2. Do you believe baby boomers and the nursing shortage are affecting proper delivery of geriatric care?

3. Do you believe that there is a shortage of nurses or there will be an inadequate number of nurses in the future?

4. What do you believe are some solutions that can be applied to remedy the nursing shortage?

5. Do baby boomers require more care than the average patient?

6. What can be done within nursing schools to better prepare nurses for geriatric patients?

Specializes in Gerontology, Med surg, Home Health.

1. People with dementia will overwhelm the system

2.Yes

3. A shortage of competent nurses. New grads are getting dumber by the day

4. Realistic expectations

5. Yes... they’re entitled

6. Don’t make nurses who choose gerontology feel less important than other specialties

Thank you for responding! I didn't know that geriatric nurses were considered less important, I sort of assumed all specialties were treated fairly.

1. What impact do you feel baby boomers have on nursing shortage? Born between '46 and '64 many of us are exhausteed and disillusioned. We started nursing when we were valued and treated well. We are getting ready (or have) retired, leaving positions that may not be filled.

2. Do you believe baby boomers and the nursing shortage are affecting proper delivery of geriatric care? As we age, taking care of some of these patients is a challenge physically. If institutions invest in the correct mechanical lifts and STAFFING and pay, older nurses may work longer, thus providing some continuity of care.

3. Do you believe that there is a shortage of nurses or there will be an inadequate number of nurses in the future? I don't believe there is a shortage of bodies. I believe that there has been a trend across the nation to cut salaried and benfited positions, leaving staffing shorthanded and cobbled together. That has left older experienced nurses out of jobs under the guise of "restructuring", renaming job titles and positions to get rid of the more costly employees. Schools are turning out nurses all the time, what the quality is, I'm not sure.

4. What do you believe are some solutions that can be applied to remedy the nursing shortage? The bean counters need to let managers staff and manage adequately.

5. Do baby boomers require more care than the average patient? I'm not sure I understand this question. As we enter nursing homes do we expect more? Are we more able to advocate for ourselves with an illness? Are we just sicker and fatter with associated co morbidities? Maybe

6. What can be done within nursing schools to better prepare nurses for geriatric patients? They need to know that there can be a very satisfactory career in nursing within LTC. Maybe nursing schools can come up with an internship in a chosen field (such as geriatrics) that also gives them time to learn some solid assessment skills. This may take more time but in the long may be better in many areas of nursing.

1. What impact do you feel baby boomers have on nursing shortage?

Generally speaking, the shortage is more so based on facilities not allowing more nurses to be on staff than not having enough nurses.

2. Do you believe baby boomers and the nursing shortage are affecting proper delivery of geriatric care?

No, the problems are way deeper than that.

3. Do you believe that there is a shortage of nurses or there will be an inadequate number of nurses in the future?

Yes, but I don't think facilities will ever willingly increase ratios.

4. What do you believe are some solutions that can be applied to remedy the nursing shortage?

Mandate nurse/pt. ratios

5. Do baby boomers require more care than the average patient?

It completely depends. Its got nothing to do with the fact that they're boomers.

6. What can be done within nursing schools to better prepare nurses for geriatric patients?

More clinical hours.
