Interview advice for OB RN position?

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hello....I am currently an RN working on a surgical/oncology floor. I have an interview coming up for an OB position, which is the reason I decided to go into nursing. I could not be happier about the potential of working in labor and delivery!!! Can anyone give some extra advice for the interview? Are there certain characteristics/traits that a director of an obstetric floor desires? Anything specific that I should focus on regarding my past nursing skills? I am generally pretty confident in interviews, but I just want to make sure I really make the right impression and that the director knows how bad I want the position. Any advice is greatly appreciated from all you OB nurses out there :) Thanks a bunch!

I would emphasize:

If you're good at pt teaching (OB has a LOT of it)

Flexibility - depending on the facility, you may have to jump from triage to L&D to postpartum/couplet, often in the same shift

Team player - if something goes bad on a strip, it's nice to have several nurses come and help out, often without even having to ask. If it's 1am and the cafeteria is closing in 30 minutes and you know there's a nurse who's been pushing with her pt and hasn't had a chance to step away from the room, it's nice to have another nurse who takes it upon herself to come into the room and ask to break her for 20 minutes, or get some food for her

I would ask about the opportunity to cross-traing among L&D, couplet care, nursery, etc

I would ask what level the nursery is

I would ask how many births they do a month

I would mention again about my flexibility WRT working with a lot of different types and styles of care providers (OBs, residents, midwives, etc)

Good luck and let us know how it went!

Even though I am not the OP I just wanted to thank you for your answer. I too have an OB position I have to interview for and I am both excited and nervous. I am a new grad, so this is more than a dream come true. I've been restudying my OB books all day in prep for any scenario questions might be thrown at me lol.

Great, Thanks for the advice!
