A month later after my application and live scan had been mailed I got my eligibility to take NCLEX-RN CA. It says 2 weeks from the date of eligibility letter they will issue and mailed my Iterim Permit.

I have a few questions with Iterim permit.

1. Once I received my IP am I allowed to work even if Im not paid yet or registered for examination?

2. Once they issued IP do I need to take NCLEX-RN exam right away?

1. once i received my ip am i allowed to work even if im not paid yet or registered for examination? ip are usually issued on first time taker. you can practice since you had paid it already together with your application fee .

2. once they issued ip do i need to take nclex-rn exam right away?

its on your own discretion if you will take the exam right away. take note once you got your result the ip is no longer valid .

hi

may ask what's the IP for? can you do nursing jobs like nursing assistant even you haven't taken your nclex?

1. Once I received my IP am I allowed to work even if Im not paid yet or registered for examination? Yes. But many hospital who'se hiring applicants on IP will ask when do you plan to take your exam. I also worked under IP. I got my IP March, starting working using IP May and took and passed NCLEX August. So I worked total of 3 months.

2. Once they issued IP do I need to take NCLEX-RN exam right away?you have 6 months. But Some hospital will insist that you take your NCLEX right away so you can work independently after passing. Or say bye bye if you fail in the case of many hospital. (No pressure intended, just explaining:smokin:)[/QUOTE]

IP stands for Interim Permit. You can apply for an IP at the same time when you submit your application for NCLEX. If the Board of Nursing (BON) approved it, you can apply for Nursing Position who need an IP to practice. In CA, your name will appear on their website stating that you have an IP I dont know in other states. IP does not have anything to do with other position like nursing assistant. You can apply for nursing assistant even without IP. I forgot to say that you need to be in the US, with SSN before the BON can issue it. Before, they also require a copy of your local (Phil) RN license.

IP validity last for 6 months. What if 6 months lapse and still I havent taken NCLEX exam, am I still qualified to take examination?

Technically eligiblity notice for NCLEX Exam valid until when?

some says once you sit to take exam IP automatically null and void? others says not until the result has been released?

If you haven't taken your NCLEX in 6 months then your IP will be invalid and you can no longer work under it. That is my understanding. Should still be OK to sit NCLEX just not work

To others wondering about IP you need to be in the US with a valid work visa to be able to use it.

what I understand in your replies is with IP you can work as a nurse even if you still haven't taken your nclex but within a certain period.

If you have an IP you can work as an Interim Permit Nurse under the direct supervision of a license nurse (S/he will cosign everything you do) within the period of six months or after taking NCLEX or whichever comes first. Provided further that you are here in the US, with SSN and IF you can find a hospital that will hire an IP nurse. ( Most of the RN does not want to precept an IP Nurse since their co-signing) And your employment is contingent upon you passing the NCLEX.

In my opinion, if you're here in the US and planning to take the NCLEX, it's not worth it working as an IP Nurse and reviewing at the same time. You might get confused with the "real nursing practice" vis-a-vis "ideal nursing world" which you need to pass NCLEX.

Just my 2 cents, it's your decision. Good luck!

To clear up things for others that are reading here, CA requires that a foreign trained nurse actually take and pass the CGFNS exam as well as the English exams before they will issue an Interim Permit to them. Things are very different if you graduated out of the US. And this is stated right on their website for the BRN.

The IP is only good for a maximum of 180 days. One must write the ?NCLEX exam before that time is up or the IP is cancelled and they cannot work in that role. Also be aware that when you write the exam, the IP essentially is no longer valid. If you pass the exam, then you become and RN and can include those letters after your name here, and if you do not, then the IP is gone. It is only valid until one writes the exam, and there is only one chance in passing the exam that is given to you.

As mentioned above, as a foreign nurse, most facilities are going to want to see that you have actually passed the NCLEX-RN before hiring you. You would be much further ahead by getting that exam done first. then apply to facilities. Things have gotten very tight in certain areas in CA in terms of finding a job, even with having the RN after your name and a CA license, it is not going to be that easy since there are many more applicants than there are jobs available for new grads here.

Best of luck to you. You may also wish to check out the CA Forum to find out more with what is going on in your area.

I also have a letter stating that I can now apply for an interim permit. I need your advice Ms Suzanne. I am a US Citizen (yes, I have an actual US passport), but I graduated nursing here in the Philippines. Will it be harder (even for a US citizen) to find work in the US with just an interim permit? I will take the NCLEX, that's for sure but Im having a hard time deciding on whether to leave this country and return to the US and take the NCLEX there or just leave my interim permit alone and take the NCLEX here in the Philippines. Honestly, are there still nursing jobs left for Foreign trained US citizen nurses like me?
