My understanding of informatics is that they design programs to do a lot of statistical extrapolation. To me, it sounds very near to quality assurance/quality improvement activities. The informatics people either design the way the form or report is going to be generated from the information in the computer system or program the system to pull out that information for the nursing staff. So, it would have to be information that is already been recorded on the patient charts. Informatics people do not work in the clinical area.
So, maybe a case study could be designed around how often the nurses actually perform q4h vital signs like they are ordered or do the qshift patient physical assessment and actually document it. That would be my take on this.
Of course, I could be totally off base here. There is a forum for informatics on allnurses.
