I am so sorry things have been been so bad for you. You have to remember though that sometimes bad things happen no matter how good of care we give, but don't forget that there are always going to be the wonderful outcomes too. This is the nature of the business we are in. Do you have someone at work you can talk to? Sometimes it helps to confide our frustrations to someone that has had the same experiences, and believe me we have all had some bad experiences. Good Luck! :heartbeat

Don't give up. I too have had a string of bad shifts. You did all you could do. We all have a string of bad shifts once in a while. It will get better. My luck isn't much better than yours right now. The only difference is I work ICU and you work L&D. Just remember it will get better. :icon_hug:

I don't believe I have anything to offer, but I do want to let you know how much I appreciate your honesty and the time you took to post.
The replies so far also help me realize that nursing won't be a bed of roses and that I need to have a way of refreshing myself during the dark times.
I believe that YOU were in the right place at the right time and, yes, there is something that you will pull from these experiences.
Thank you again for sharing :)

I don't know specifically what YOU are supposed to learn from this, but you need to know that things that you described happen to all of us, no matter how experienced we are. No matter what you do right, sometimes you will have a bad outcome. It wasn't your fault the baby had anomalies; they would have been there regardless. The nature of the business is that sometimes things are going to be bad and there's nothing you can do to avoid or prevent it. You keep hanging on, and you will see that things will start to get better. Bad things do seem to come in clusters. Chin up.

This is so so overwhelming, and it is so clear that you really care. I would want someone like you around if a grandbaby of mine was having it rough, or if the out come was devastating.
Bad things happen, no matter what we do. Some things are just out of our control. Focus on what you can do. I know that does not help with the sadness, but it may help you find a way to go on.

Bad things happen to good people. At least you are gaining a great deal of experience. Reevaluate things and consider your patients to be lucky to have you as a nurse. Hang in there.

sometimes bad things happen... maybe you just need a break... there are times that i also make mistake (in my previous job) and I feel that I do not like working anymore and wanted to quit. I tried my best not to feel that way but it shows in my work. then I take a vacation.. and then I am energized again...Take a break...or transfer to another department...
