I need advice

Hello:

My name is Veronica I have been practicing as an LPN for 8 years. Most of my experience is in Public Health where I worked for 5 years. The other 3 years of my career are in acute care in a small rural hospital (post-partum, med surg). Currently I am enrolled in school because I want to become an RN, I will be graduating in May 2006 if all goes well. I would like to know how many years of experience should I have before working in the emergency department. Which certification must one have before working in the emergency department? and can those certification be done as soon I have successfully passed my state boards? The last question I have is regarding labor & delivery. Is it true that there is a high liability with L&D? Would you recommend that a new RN nurse work in labor & delivery and the emergency department? (after being oriented)

I would really appreciate any input you might have. I am trying to decide which area in nursing should I start working in when I am done with school. Thank you, for taking the time to write me back.

Thank You,

Veronica

Have you placed much thought into working on the hospital's postpartum unit? Perhaps you could conjure up a couple of years worth of experience in postpartum before progressing to L&D. They're two different areas...

I am looking for advice, i am enrolling at university next week to do nurse educator course, does anyone know what subjects I will be taking?

If you live in a city you will have no problem at all as a new grad getting a job in the ED. All you need is CPR and the hospital will give you classes in ACLS, PALS, whatever. The world is at your feet as a new grad RN.

Veronica, we had students in our last graduating class get jobs RIGHT OUT OF SCHOOL in the ED, ICU, etc. I would think with your experience and knowledge there shouldn't be a problem getting a job in whatever area of nursing you're interested in.

Good luck, and I hope you find the job of your dreams!! :p
