Because I am a male and you are a female. Yep, I had a patient tell me that last night. He did eventually do as requested, but honestly this is the type of patient that tests me the most. When I was updating doc about the weekend he even chuckled and asked how that worked out for him.

Gotta love it! At least he did as requested.
He did ask for whoever was in charge because he didn't like his options, I told him I was in charge and those were his options (I was charge nurse)

Kinda like..."you are not the boss of me!"
Yeah, kinda. But if the staff member was male it would not have been an issue.

This sort of thing happens all the time: A male Patient won't respond to a female Nurse but they will to me or any other male Staff Member.
This is called Being a Bully. Bullies typically have low self-esteems and show their power by bullying anyone they believe is inferior to them.
Couple the Bully personna with a Mental Illness and/or as Personality Disorder and you've got your hands full.
Emotioness, factual, direct confrontation, as you probably did, Mandychelle, works wonders with Bullies. Show them your Achilles Heel and they will use it to their advantage and wreak havoc.

Yep emotionless is a great way to describe it. I had patients tell me they hate when my voice take on the quality because they know it's not how I normally am.

What exactly are you asking........?
Does this not also depend on the pts condition, past life experience etc.......? If you have a male available, get them to relate.......? or just take a little time..... x
wasnt asking anything, just relaying what had happened at during a shift.
Yes, it does depend on a patients condition, however, in many cases it has nothing to do with mental illness, but everything to do with the patients feeling that a female has no right to tell a man what to do. As Davey said about, it was bullying behavior.
