I am about to give up

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

:ohello to all.......i have been reading allnurses.com for about a year or so and finally got up the nerve to post. it became my desire to become a nurse when my son was born nine years ago (@28weeks). i felt like the nurses were his angels. his stay in nicu was a life/career changing experience for me. well for the past few years, i have attempted to make becoming a nurse a reality. my problem lies with getting into a nursing program. once i began my journey, i placed too much on my plate and failed a&p i (twice) but finally passed with a b. i have gone on to complete a&pii with an a. i have actually done really well in all of my other classes. well because of my failures, i have made myself ineligible for the nursing program at my univeristy and was encouraged to apply to a community college. i applied but was denied for the fall 2007 program but i will reapply for the fall 2008 program. well i thought i would be cleaver and apply to an additional community college...thinking i would maximize my options. sadly, i found out today that they only offer an lpn to rn bridge program. i have already submitted transcript requests to previous colleges as well as a nursing application to the college. i did all of this because someone in the nursing dept told me that i did not need to be an lpn to apply to their program..........i feel i wasted my time, money and energy.:o

i'm about to give up and just complete a bachelor's in a field i'm not passionate about........................sorry so long......

Welcome, blkbutterfly.

There are several of us around whose experiences as NICU parents have led to us into the nursing field.

It sounds like you've still got at least one application still alive so why give up? Even if you've been turned down across the board, why give up if it's your passion?

Take additional biology and chemistry classes to become a more attractive candidate. Consider becoming an LPN and then bridging to RN (or stay an LPN). Find another CC whose requirements make you a better candidate. Consider becoming a CNA as a step in the right direction.

Many people wait years to finally matriculate. If nursing is your dream and/or passion, don't give it up so easily.

All the best to you in 2008.

:welcome: Why are you ineligible? Because you failed A&P twice? Does this rule apply to all nursing schools? Cause if it does then there is really nothing you can do. Although, you may try and go the LPN route as an alternative. But I wonder if they would let you bridge into the RN programs afterwards or if they will overlook your previous grades.

Good luck

blkbutterfly,

if nursing truly is your passion, then do not give it up! keep pushing until you get in there. i will give you my testimony about the hardships i faced to get to nursing school:

i attended san diego state university in hopes of getting into their nursing program. after completing prerequisites over a 3 year span, my grades were not good enough to compete with the 200 applicants fighting over 90 slots. it was one of the darkest moments in my life. i thought to myself that maybe nursing was not for me. however, i sat back and looked at my options: community college with a 6 semester wait, maric college (private college with an associates degree in nursing), or national university (private college with a BSN). i applied to all 3 schools, and immediately got an offer from maric college. however, 2 weeks later i got the acceptance form national university, and found myself jumping up for joy that i finally got into nursing school.

so don't give up. it took me a total of 6 years to get into a nursing school, and i didn't give up because it was the one thing i really wanted to accomplish. the road is long, hard, cruel, and sometimes depressing, but if you keep hope, have faith in God, and really strive for what you want, you will achieve that which you truly desire!

hi, yes i have made myself ineligible for pre-licensure admittance because of the failures. there is the rule that applies to my university....every university is different (bsn program). however, the community college (adn) i applied to does not care how many time a person takes a course!!!!! also, my university has an rn options program and an advanced placement option for lpns. so i can go through the backdoor, it will just take much longer...............thanks so much for the response .............

Whichever door you enter through, you'll still be a nurse so just keep trucking....you'll get there. Don't give up!

Yup, in my area, you can get an ADN and then bridge over to BSN, and it takes the same amount of time. Best of luck to you. Don't give up on your dream, because all the hardwork and frustration will pay out in the end.

I agree with this 100% it's taken me 4 years to finally get into nursing school, I was told by my first instructor, that getting your degree is not about how much you know but about how much tanacity you have, if you can jump the hoops, cut through the red tape and find ways to make it happen then that is how you will get your degree! I think this is especially true for us "returning" students, we have so much more on our plates, kids, jobs families etc...then if we were fresh out of high school, we don't have parents pushing buttons and making calls, its us having to do all this extra crud, so look around find other options, we are fortunate there are so many look for a school that will take you on the whole person who you are, grades, work/life experience, personal essays' I am sure you have a fantastic story to tell, there are schools out there that do all of these things, stick it out do the leg work and find other ways to go and you will one day be a great nurse!

Whichever door you enter through, you'll still be a nurse so just keep trucking....you'll get there. Don't give up!

EXACTLY!! And the time will go by with or without your degree, so you might as well chip away at it while you wait.

most schools offer something called academic forgiveness. You can have everything from that quarter and before wiped off your transcript if it was a while ago, or a hardship occured. I had the same problem with english at my school, I got a c in high school running start then took it again and dropped half way through the quarter. I am going to take academic forgiveness so that I may still be admitted to the program. Something to check into. Sometimes the person you are talking to does not know everything! I learned that the hard way :)

Blkbutterfly,

Don't give up! I'm in GA too and nursing programs are hellishly hard to get into around here. I loaded too much on my plate with sciences not once but twice and had to withdraw, so I know exactly how you feel. There are always options. Try for an LPN program and then bridge to RN if you want to, or apply to private schools which are sometimes less competitive. If you keep trying and just take it one step at a time, your dreams will be a reality before you know it. Best of luck, I'll be sending positive energy your way!:balloons:
