could I get in the nursing program

Published

If any one can give me advice on this issue I have at school I had a D when I started school and I had a d last semester well I know there is no excuse for having D's and well honestly the first one I was overwhelmed with classes and the second one I had stuff going on. I was told that I can not apply to a nursing program with 2 d's because they are a failing grade and therefore can not apply to the nursing program at my college until 5 years. I was wondering if any one knows what I could do and I would not like to give up on not being a nurse because that is what I have always wanted to do. what should I do? is there any tech colleges that would accept me now? I have all the prerequisites for the program am just finishing up and re taking the one from last semester.

I would retake those classes with Ds and get As. What is a competitive GPA for the program's you are applying to in comparison to yours? Be aware that achieving the minimum GPA to get in does not mean you will be accepted. Most programs look for a 3.5+ to be competitive.

their minimum is 2.6 but thanks so much :]

Just FYI not trying to be mean because trust me I may not get accepted into my program I'm borderline with GPA but most nursing schools accept 2.5 and above but won't even consider people who don't have 3.5+. It really depends on the program and the GPAs off competitors trying to get accepted. I would turn those D's into As!!

yea I am that is what im doing right now but they told me they put me on probation for having 2 d's and that I can not apply to the nursing program I do not know if that applies to all the school or just the one I did all my classes in

Just because the minimum is listed as a 2.6 doesn't mean that anyone with anything near that low actually gets in. Acceptance rates are typically around 50%, there are only so many seats available, so you can bet everyone who does is much higher. Sometimes tech schools are even more competitive with more people trying to get in. To be honest I don't think there is anything you can do but retake the courses. I have looked into several programs and none would accept Ds. One would sort of be okay with a C in A&P, knowing that the instructor is really tough, if you do well in the application otherwise.

That doesn't mean you will get in with a 2.6. You are going up with applicants with 3.5+ GPAs. What is your GPA now?

There are probably some tech schools that would accept you into an LPN or ASN program, but chose carefully. Many of them are "for-profit" schools where it's easy to get in, but the tuition is substantially higher than in public schools. I have a friend who taught (briefly) at one particular school that makes most of it's living taking government money for "job retraining" and welfare-to-work programs. Her brief teaching career ended after one semester when the state shut them down. In evaluating these schools be sure that they are approved by your state BON and accredited. Ask about the qualifications of their faculty. Also check their NCLEX pass rates for the last few years (anything below 90% for first-time test takers is a bit shaky), and their reputation in the community. Ask local employers if they hire graduates from that school. The last thing you need is to come out of some program with a shiny new diploma, loaded up with student loan debt and unable to pass the NCLEX or find a job.

I don't see what the D's were in. If you got them in history or something, that doesn't really matter. Look at the schools you're applying to. I am applying to two programs that don't mentioned any classes but A&P and Micro. So see what's really important to your schools. If the D's are in these two classes then YES you will not get into any program, and I'm sure you want those grades to be A's anyway since they are the stepping stone to the classes.

I agree with feeneishia. Ds in A&P and Micro will not get you in any program. These subjects are the basis for everything in nursing. You won't survive nursing school without having a good understanding of those subjects. I find it hard to believe that you can't reapply for 5 years. Are sure that doesn't mean if you are ALREADY in nursing school and get Ds? Talk with the nursing school director or an adviser. Remember, the college wants you to succeed and they are there to help you do that. Don't get discouraged! You have to fight for what you want and the answers never come easy.

The Ds will affect the OP if any program looks a cumulative GPA versus pre-req GPA. It is very common for schools to look at both.

I find myself in a similar predicament. I made a D in a gov't class yet I fill the other requirements making As & Bs in the rest of my courses. I have already applied to at least 3 nursing programs does that mean that I may not get into any of the programs that I applied to??
