1 hr glucose test

I wasn't pregnant, but they suspected I was developing diabetes and had to do a 3 hr GTT. I vomited it up everywhere almost instantly. I never did the test again, and time went on to make it obvious I had diabetes without the test.

I know it's not the same with OB, though. I have heard of people being allowed to drink orange soda instead. Maybe ask about that?

Yeah, I had to be fasting when I had mine done.

Thanks, just wondered as OP mentioned she had a light breakfast and milk and wondered if that may have caused her to feel ill

No, I didn't have to fast. My OB told me to eat a light breakfast before I went. All I had was a piece of toast with a tiny amount of peanut butter and about a cup of milk. I was afraid that if I didn't eat I would get sick. ?? I have another appointment on Thursday morning but it's later in the morning so I'll have to eat. I heard that if you can't keep the glucose drink down that they just consider you to have gestational diabetes and treat you as such. Does anyone know if that's true?

Does seem strange as I just had a quick look on google for this and every site indicates if challenging (ie give glucose solution) then you should fast. I haven't heard that they can diagnosis the condition if you can't keep the drink down

I am not a OB nurse but I am an RN with G.D. (now on diet and insulin). Treating someone for G.D. because they can't keep the glucose down for the test would be stupid.

Work with the lab staff or your MD to help you take the screening test (you could try taking small sips of water between gulps of the drink, try it REALLY cold, etc.). Or tell the doc you simply can't/won't do it and they'll figure out some other way to screen you.

Don't drink it so fast. I know it's nasty, and it's hard to not want to get it over with, but it will upset your stomach if you do.

I've never heard of anyone getting dx'd with GD if they couldn't keep the solution down, I've seen lots of people have to go back and do it again three or four times.

I had the one hour test and didn't have to fast. I didn't think the drink was that bad. It was like non carbonated orange soda. (this was for OB as well part of my first trimester screenings)

I would call the lab where your suppose to have the test done. This is supposed to be a fasting test and your doc might not know that. Usually there is a fasting Glucose done and than one done an hour after you finish your drink.

The 1 hour glucose test isn't fasting. The 3 hour one is. The phlebotomist (and multiple others who had to come and watch me vomit!) asked me if I ate anything. They said not to come for the repeat test on Thursday with an empty stomach. So I'm going to try it again tomorrow, later in the morning, and if I get sick again I'll just call my OB and go from there.
