How much of labia do you cleanse when inserting a Foley?

This is a really specific question:

When you insert a Foley into a woman, how much of the labia would you cleanse with Betadine? For example, would you go out to the very edges of the labia majora and beyond?

I know there is a big risk of UTI with Foleys even when perfect aseptic technique is followed, esp when indwelling catheters are left in a while. So, I'm wondering if how extensive an area the Betadine covers would affect UTI risk at all.

I don't want to cover a woman in orange hue; but I also want to cover enough area such that when the labia close around the catheter, there is some reasonable buffer area of protection against creeping bacteria.

i first give immaculate peri care.

w/the betadine:

1 stick- swipe down centrally, over urethra

2nd stick- swipe down to left,

3rd stick- swipe down to right.

never use back and forth motion w/betadine, as you are recontaminating.

This way. It's the way I was taught in school and have never strayed from it.

Amen.....

I use whatever cleansing clothes are available (most LTC around here use some sort of "baby wipe" for incontinent care) ---

Then use the 3 swabs as described....

And make sure afterwards you clean the betadine off, it's very irritating to the skin.
