How did you know?

How did you know that you wanted to work in the NICU? I am currently doing my maternity/ pees rotation and never thought about doing NICU until now. How do you know if it is right for you, or if you are right for it!?

Even before I'd been in one, I just knew it was what I wanted to do. I was right!

Hmm..funny, I was asked this question last night by a family member...however I do not work in the NICU but I have choosen it for my final practicum in school. I chose NICU b/c looking back, I loved my pediatric rotations, especially when assigned the infants and I loved my high-risk L&D experience. During L&D, I admired the NICU nurses and their role during high-risk deliveries...this led me to shadow there for a day and I was impressed at the level of teamwork and collaboration on the unit. Never saw anything quite like that on a floor!

So, I can't say I am one of those who always knew...I guess I will find out if I'm right in a couple months!

I didn't. Personally I needed a job and had applied for peds and L&D. The NICU manager called me and asked if I wanted an interview.

I've thanked God many many times that L&D and Peds weren't hiring at that time.
