hello. :)
i'm new around here and i'm interested in maybe becoming a nurse. if i decide to go that route, i'd like to perhaps specialize in ob-gyn.
my question is, what makes me "specialized" in ob-gyn? do i have to study it in college and get a minor in it? or do i become specialized by working in an ob-gyn unit at a hospital?
i'm sure i sound clueless, so as much info as you are willing to give would be much appreciated! thank you very much. :redpinkhe

Before you specialize in anything, you have to go to nursing school and pass the licensure exam. That can be done any number of ways, but the bottom line is you have to have a nursing license first. Then, once you are a nurse, you can start working in OB/Gyn and become 'specialized.' It comes after, not before, you graduate. Hope this sheds some light. :)

While in Nursing School, you will learn about all specialties and will be studying and doing clinicals for most of each specialty. You may find you will like another "specialty" after being exposed to most of them.
thank you very much for your help! that's exactly what i wanted to know. :icon_hug:

A great way to gain experience in OB is to try to get a student nurse extern position while your in school. I work in L&D and we have gone on to hire a few of our nurse externs right after they graduate.
