If you are working as a firefighter/paramedic which is 24 hours on, 48 hours off, is there a way to obtain your RN in your off time?

Obviously, there is no way you could attend a conventional college because of the 24/48 work schedule.

you may have to change your work schedule... thats the only thing i can think of...

Paramedics can become RNs through Excelsior College. http://www.excelsior.edu

Many community/techincal colleges also offer Paramedic-RN transition programs that I would assume work around the expected 24/48 schedule. Check your local CCs, see if they offer one!

I was an LPN and did my RN online through a local university. It was a pilot LPN to RN program for our state, but we had 100% pass rate on the NCLEX, so they continued it. I worked full-time and did my clinicals on Saturday. Some of my classmates did night shift clinicals.

It depends on what is offered through your local schools...I couldn't see where you couldn't go to class when it's scheudled...if you can get every M, T, W...whatever, off.

also, be leery of some online programs. Often they are not accredited in certain states, and you may waste the money and find out that they don't meet your state's requirements...

Good luck with whatever happens.

Just to clarify and agree w/the pp, the online program I did is accredited by our SBN, the NLN, and NCSBN otherwise I wouldn't have pursued it for the pp reasons already listed.
