How to get into the ER?

Published

Hello all, I will be graduating an RN program relatively soon and I was wondering how does a new grad get their foot in the door when trying to secure an ER position?

I'm a new grad and will start in the ER next month. I did my preceptorships in the ER during school and picked up PRN shifts (I was an NA for the system already). I let them know that I wanted to work there after graduation. They interviewed 5 and hired 2.

You apply and apply and apply. Be prepared to move. ER is one that usually you know someone or you have some sort of background like a tech or preceptorship in the ER. The more flexible like working off shifts like afternoon or night time (usually night time) or starting part-time will slightly increase your odds of starting in the ER.

Basically apply and apply. Some places do not start people in the ER right away. Usually after a year or two you can transfer into an ER internally.

I was a paramedic/unit clerk/phleb in an ER before I went to the ICU but then I hated it so I accepted a position elsewhere in the ER.

I started as a new grad in the ED. Getting the job wasn't difficult at all. I have worked in 4 ER's and they were all crawling with new grads because of frequent turnover.
