How far would you drive?

I am in the thick of applying & interviewing for jobs. There are 2 major hospitals in the city we just bought a house in but unfortunately they are bogged down with many applicants and do not have many openings. I have had interviews with both, got turned down by one, and am still "in the running" at the other hospital. I have also interviewed at a smaller community hospital 30 miles from our house and another major hospital 55 miles from our house. I have a job offer on the table from the major hospital 55 miles away and am trying to figure out what I am going to do. If I get a no from the other hospital in our city, I will have to decide between a smaller community hospital or the large hospital. How far would you drive to a job? I am thinking the experience would be best at the larger hospital but don't know how I feel about the drive. My plan, if need be, is to work for 1 year at either the small community hospital or the larger facility and then try to get into the 2 hospitals in my city after I have some experience. So I guess I am just looking for opinions on the matter, hopefully this all made sense!

i live 3 minutes from the hospital in our town, but decided on accepting a job offer in a hospital 1 hour away from where i live. the reason i chose the hospital an hour away is because i will get more experience working in there icu as a new grad. than the one in our town. the pay is better also, i know some people might say yeah the pay might be better but all the gas you use you want see the difference, but the differnce in pay here and there is a huge difference not just a couple of dollars so it is worth it. another big plus is i get to work with one of my closet friends from school so that is cool.

just way your pros and cons. if you have to, take the job at the larger facility and get the experience and the reapply to the ones closer to home

hope this helped some

class of may 2008 rocks:yeah::yeah::yeah:

It's not so much the distance it's the drive time. With the city one 55 miles away, are you going to have to drive during rush hour? Is it all interstate? You need to work out drive time.

Please consider these points when deciding. Being a new grad is very stressful. Just read the first year in nursing threads. Are you going to be working 12 hrs, which really means 12 1/2 hrs? The probability that you will get out on time as a new grad is not high, you should count on being late out.

To recap, drive time in + working hours + lunch break + getting out late + drive time home = amount of time gone from your home/family.

Take the job that is going to cause you less stress, get your basic nursing under your belt and then apply for those other closer hospitals again.
