Hi everybody,

I am moving to Honolulu to work as a nurse,and I would really appreciate if somebody could tell me about housing in Honolulu.How much it would cost me to rent a one bedroom condo at Waikiki beach? Is it a good idea to work at The Queen's and live at Waikiki,at all?How much does it cost to buy a one bedroom condo?On which web side I need to go to get theese information?

Hi, I am currently a traveler working at Queen's and living in Waikiki. If you're looking for your own housing, I would suggest also looking around on craigslist.com. I also went to several condo buildings that I was interested in living in and checked out their bulletin board of rentals (if you're already here in Hawaii. Thats how I found the next place that I will be staying at during the winter season). A lot of rentals in Waikiki are fully-furnished (including housewares, linens, pots and pans, etc.) because most are rented out as vacation rentals. Please keep in mind that starting this month of Nov., a lot of rental prices increase because of the holidays as well as the Honolulu Marathon in Dec., Probowl in Jan., etc. Average studio prices range from $1200-$3200, 1-bedrooms range from $2200-$3600. Expensive! All depends on location and view. I know of some travelers that stay at Discovery Bay, Ilikai Marina, and Waikiki Banyan. They all seem to be happy with their accomodations.

The bus system is great. There is a bus stop right across the street from where I am living. Many of the travelers that I know at Queen's take the bus. My experience with the bus has been good. It is very reliable; approx. 15-20min. bus ride to Queen's from the outskirts of the Waikiki area (close to Ala Moana).

Errr... studio for 1200-$3200?

I'm paying $1400 for a 2-bedroom apartment that's actually the bottom half of a house and pretty nice, and I thought I was paying too much...

I've seen plenty of 1 Bedroom (bigger than studio) in the 1000-1400 range. You just don't look in the Waikiki area... I live in Makiki which is 5 minute drive from Waikiki, and 10 minute walk to Queens if I worked there...

That said... don't expect the same amenities that you'd get elsewhere for the same money.... and beware the flying cockroaches... =)

One of the things you need to consider, other than the rent, is everything is more expensive than Hawaii, because most everything has to be brought over by ship or plane, so thhat is something to keep in mind.
