Hospital-based programs in FL?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi,

I'm an about-to-be-laid-off elementary teacher in FL due to budget cuts, not job performance. Anyway, I'm looking at it as a positive event: I finally can become a nurse! But I'm really sick of school, and would love to just train in a hospital. Are there any of those programs left? Thanks.

Otherwise, should I go for the accelerated BSN or an LPN? I don't have 2 years to spend for the RN, I'll starve to death by then.

there are hospital based programs, or so called diploma programs, but are in the midwest of the country. only a handfull left.

in FL, you have to go to a university or community college for your RN degree.

it's not too bad!!

i believe Florida Hospital in Orlando has a school of nursing. :)

I'm sorry. This is a little off topic, but what county in FL is laying off elementary teachers?!?!

We're facing multi-million dollar budget cuts. Manatee County had a 180 layoffs last year I was told. I'm in Sarasota and we've been told about 200 positions will be cut, so that means we're probably going to have layoffs unless 200 people retire or quit this summer (not likely :o ) We're all very scared right now, but I'm ready to become a nurse!

I'd like to beome an RN, I just don't know if I can afford to be unemployed (or under-employed) for 2 years. I'll check out that hospital in Orlando, thanks!

WOW! Good luck in your search. Maybe you can consider the LPN route. There are part-time programs in my area. Then, you can work part-time as an LPN while completing your RN. It is very difficult to get financial aid for an ASN or BSN if you already have a degree.

The accelerated BSN is only 18 months. However, those are a little more competitive.

flfuturenurse18,

to get some extra cash for nursing school you may want to let the school (employer) know that you volunteer for lay-off. this would allow you to get a severance package, ensure that you are laid-off, and protect a colleague’s job. if you leave it to chance that you will be selected to get laid-off, it may not happen. a friend of mine did this when her company was having lay-offs -- they honored it and she is now receiving her severance package.

The University of Miami has an accelerated BSN that is full time for 12 months. I've also checked Barry University has a program that is entirely done at Baptist Hospital - Kendall (but I believe that it's 5 semesters long!) I've also heard that Nova has an onsite progam at Baptist Kendall as well. These onsite programs might take longer but they help you pay for school as long as you work for them for an agreed upon amount of time. Good Luck!

I think Brandon Regional Hospital will soon be starting (if they haven't already) a nursing program.
