I'm with Tweety. As far as I know, we don't have anything like that in the states. Another potential complication: the hospitals here have contracts with the nursing schools so that students can come in for clinicals. I believe that you'd have trouble finding a hospital or school willing to work with a student coming from Australia (but hey, we'd love to have you! :)). Maybe someone will come along and know more than I do, but at the moment, I don't know if it's really possible.

There is a hospital in my area that offers a paid nursing residency that lasts about 5 1/2 months. ADN and BSN nurses are both eligible. I plan to apply. The pay is lower than at other hospitals but I think it is worth it. Many hospitals in the US only give new grads orientations that last 6 or even 3 weeks.

Hospitals around here offer intern/residency programs. The new grad gets paid new grad wages. Around here that's approximatley $17.00 to $19.00 an hour. I'm not sure how long the internship lasts, but, I don't think it lasts up to a year. Some other hospitals offer orientation to new grads and would be precepted by an experienced nurse. All this while being paid. By the way, this is in Illinois and Missouri hospitals. Hope this helps!

i believe that a hospital in our area has [or did have] a nurse tech program that students close to graduations can get into..don't know what the pay scale is but they are limited in what they can do but it does give some hands on experience
