from Alaska, hoping to move to Houston. I keep seeing posts about the HESI and I have never heard of it before. Is it a required test in Texas? Or just recommended? Or only required by certain employers?

HESI is only required by some schools. For my school, Austin Community College, prospective RN students have to take the HESI A2 which is the entrance exam. For my program the only parts we had to take were the Math, Reading Comprehension, and A&P plus three other personality assessment tests which weren't part of the grade. Every school is different. I have seen some people on these boards who have to take the HESI A2 and they have to take Math, Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, Chemistry, Physics, and A&P.

After you take the HESI A2 and get into our program, we have to take the level 2 HESI after we finish our second semester, which is sort of like a practice NCLEX. The purpose, I believe, is to predict how well you will do on the NCLEX, so if you don't do well then you can focus on the areas that you need to improve. I believe we also have to take an exit HESI before the NCLEX. It is all about NCLEX pass rates.

I think some schools in Texas don't use the HESI. I have heard some use the NET as an entrance exam. I am not too familiar with the schools in Houston.

In my program, we had to take and pass HESI to be able to graduate. There was also a mid-program HESI test, and remediation was required if you didn't pass that.

No, the HESI A2 it's required while applying to nursing school and it's just another form of a nrsing entrance exam like the NET and ATI. UT-Houston still uses the NET,but I know many schools in Texas are trying to stop using the NET, and more and beginning to use the HESI exam,Texas Woman's University required that exam and their nursing entrance exam, and your score required in order to be considered for admission plus your GPA.

For RADIATIONRN2BE, I'm currently at ACC completing my pre-reqs for the ADN program. I'll be taking Phys, Micro and Pharm for Spring 2011 so I can apply for Spring 2012. Is there any recommendations you can give me of professors for those listed courses. Also did you use a study guide for the HESI A2? Thanks!

annbananz, I am about to take the HESI on this Tuesday, have you already taken yours at ACC? I was just wondering how in depth the questions are for each body system. I always over study and I'm afraid that I'm doing that now! I would love to be able to concentrate on important areas for these last few days but I have no idea what I need to concentrate on for A&P! Any pointers?

Thank you!

As far as I have seen, all nursing schools require some sort of entrance exam (HESI or TEAS.. as far as I have encountered) I had to take the TEAS and HESI, but it seems like most schools do HESI now... it's a standardized test like SAT/ACT.
