I'm a nursing student and I am very interested in shadowing a Nurse in a local Burn Unit. Does anyone know the process? I recently called and was transferred to HR? And another time I called they said I had to go through my school and fill out paper work for a preceptorship. I am really confused? I live In California and just want to experience this specific unit. I am really lost.
Any advice would help :)

The paper work that they are talking about is anagreement between the facility and the school saying that they will accept the responsibility of having a student and that the school will be willing to show proof of any info that they would need to allow you on the floor such as immunizations, CPR training ...ect, as well as what they would expect for personal and professional conduct while on their site. I would speak with your advisor or the insstructor that handles internships, externships, preceptorships ...ect. They will have to either set it up for you or will have to write a letter stating that you are affiliated with the school so that you are not some stranger wanting to snoop around. Good luck!

You can try talking to HR. I shadowed one summer and all of my paperwork/interviews/etc. were through the volunteer portion of HR. I was in high school at the time, but I don't see why you can't at least talk to them to see if they will arrange something for you. Other options: if you know a nurse, if you know anyone who has connections with that area, that could help too. Sometimes it's all in who you know.
Thanks this helps a lot!
