Hating 1st Job

I picked a job and now I am really starting to hate it. It's only been 2 months and I haven't started on the shift that I want to work. I am really considering starting to apply at different hospitals. I don't even know if any hospital would even consider a new grad looking to switch departments after 2 months so I am even considering something more drastic like trying to get on a fire department again.

Should I wait and see how I like working on the actual shift that I will work or would it be better to start applying at new jobs? I know that I was lucky with this job and it could take more than a year to find another job. I won't quit till I have another offer.

I hated my first job but I stuck it out for a little over a year. The first 6 months of working as a new nurse is the hardest, its a huge learning curve. That first year, I learned so much and as each month passed I became more confident, my time management skills improved etc.. With the limited details you provided, I would say stay, learn all you can then move on if you still "hate" this job..

I agree.

No, 2 months is not enough for prospective employers to consider you for hire. Thats not even close to scratching the surface to building up your skills and time management. I would know because I had dared to try that when I first started. I was on a very busy critical care unit and within 3 months attempted to apply somewhere else as I "hated" it there. With no luck I decided to stick it out for a year which paid off because I was able to transfer to a specialty that I've always wanted to be in. I would have missed that opportunity if I had quit before my time.

The first year won't be easy. I would encourage you to get your year there then move on after reevaluating. Good luck.

I know the feeling and I think that when it comes to new nurse jobs, its half a dozen of one and six of another, so just stay!
