Grading + and - system

Published

I live and attend school in the Bay Area. I am researching BSN programs to apply to. Some here and some schools are out of state. I noticed that some universities use a + and minus system. The junior colleges in the bay area do NOT use this system. It kills me, because if we did, there are a lot of classes where I would have received a B+ instead of a solid B. This would have helped me so much when applying to a BSN program. I took nutrition last fall. I got an 88.9% and my instructor would not round it. (I know, its sucks) when I talked to the admissions people at UNLV, they said, sorry...we can only go by what the transcripts say, so if it's a B...then it's a B. Not a plus.

This is so frustrating. 😩

I've personally never expected professors to round final grades. Even if it's not a grade i like, it's my problem, not theirs. I received the grade that i earned.

However, if they are willing to round, i always appreciate it.

I never expect them to round grades, but she was a very tough grader. Example: For our final, we had to research a topic that she gave us and make a poster board. You would think that as long as you follow the guidelines she would give you full credit. But, she didn't. She looked at it and pointed out what she felt I could of done differently. Really? If you don't like the pictures I chose, that's fine, but don't deduct 10 points.

Anyways, when applying to certain schools, they give extra points for having a + as opposed to a solid B. The + on my transcript would have helped, but my school doesn't do that. í ½í¸•

Yeah I'm with conjure, I never expect teachers to round grades up. I bust my butt so I have cushion if need be. And come on? An 88.9 is not a 89.9. That's a full percentage point difference, which is A LOT.

I had instructors that provided the means to add to one's grade during the course, so that rounding at the end was not necessary. One, in particular, warned us of his policy. You would see people get 104 on exams and at the end have averages that might go over 100. No doubt about what grade they were going to get. Everybody had the same opportunity to get the extra points. There weren't any complaints that I recall.

My initial post is not about expecting my instructors to round my grades. My frustration is the grading system at some of the schools that I am considering applying to, is not the same as the schools in my area. 2 of the programs I would like to apply to base their nursing applications on a point scale. And for their point scale example: B+ 3 points B 2.5 points B- 2 points. (This is just an example)

The schools in my area do NOT do this. So, an 88.9% will not show on my transcripts as a B+, it just says B. If we used the same system other schools used, those extra points can help a whole lot. I feel there is a big difference between someone who gets a 89% and someone who gets an 80%.

I understand your frustration because the schools in my area are the same way. However, I knew this would be an obstacle from the beginning; since i've started, i've made sure to do anything and everything to get 90% or higher. Channel your frustration into motivation for getting A's. You're definitely not alone in this; many people are running into the same problem.

TEAS will always make up for the grades! Try to check for TEAS prep class around the Bay Area. One of my friends in my nursing cohort took the class and got a 95. He was accepted to SJSU, CSUEB, SFSU, and a few in Southern California. Got a C in anatomy and a B in Micro.

That is really interesting they allowed your friend to apply with a C. All of the universities i have looked into will not let you apply with a C in Anatomy, Phys, or micro. But, good to know. Thanks.

If you live in the Bay Area, why are you not applying to any of the incredible Community college we are so lucky to have? You'll spend the same Amy of money for your entire ADN that you'll spend for one semester at a university. Then you can get your BSN on the CPOST prigrams through the nearest Cal State campus.

Kind of on topic....but I had 89.4% in BIO, and the tutor refused to round me up, so I ended class with a B instead of an A, and that hit my (up to that point) stellar GPA. Grrrr! 1 measly 10th of a percent! I could have kicked myself!!
