Hi, i am an experienced nicu nurse and currently live in tampa florida. I am looking to make a change and relocate. I am considering arizona, florida, california, north and south carolina, and alabama. Does anyone work at a great nicu, one they love going to work to every day?? If so please share any information with me, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I love babies.

Specializes in Maternal - Child Health.

I left Charlotte, NC in the 1990's, but the NICU at Carolina's Medical Center was excellent, both in terms of patient care and educational opportunities. I think it would be worth checking into.

Good luck!

I know you dont want VA, but UVA in Charlottesville VA was EXCELLENT!! I was a travel nurse for 2 years and went back to UVA twice! As far as NC... Ive heard good things about Wake Med (very hard to get a job bc retention is so good), also CMC. South Carolina.. I loved MUSC in Charleston.. beautiful weather, great docs and nurses to work with, always something to do. San Diego Childrens is beautiful too! Good luck in deciding!

What about Georgia? There are several great facilities here.

I am open to Georgia, where specifically?? Thank you

Well, my first day in the NICU at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany (South GA) is on Monday. I can't speak from experience yet, but I have heard MANY wonderful things about that Unit. They are a level III NICU, and many of their nurses told me that they would never work anywhere else - they had found their home.

I have also heard great things about the NICU at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. I spoke to a nurse that used to work there and she loved it!

Also, you should look into Children's at Scottish Rite because it boasts that it has the only pediatric surgical NICU in Georgia (that's a part of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta).

Those are the only 3 that I have heard a lot about, but I am sure there are many other fantastic NICU's in Georgia.

Good luck to you!

Steve, the web site for Spartanburg Regional has changed. It's now www.spartanburgregional.com Hope this helps.

I worked with an awesome NNP in AZ who had a full time position at CMC in Charlotte. She loved it there. She traveled to AZ every few months and worked for a few weeks. I would recommend my unit in AZ, but they are ******* people off with layoffs right now... not to mention I would never recommend anyone move to AZ :) It's dirty and hot! That is why I left!

Smallfry- can you tell me more about UVA's NICU? I interviewed there 5 years ago, but didn't accept the position because I was offered a med-surg float pool position. I am now looking to try NICU or Mother-Baby (postpartum). I have been out of nursing school for 9 years. My life is now firmly seated in Lynchburg( I love it), an hour south of UVA, and I don't like to drive. But I may consider it.... do you remember anything the UVA nurses would mention about the Lynchburg baby transfers? ( trying to see how my hospital 'rates')

Thanks!

Cutiedeer... I loved UVA! I almost took a permanent position had it not been for my husbands transfer. UVA is very good to their nurses. I learned so much there. I think there is a higher standard for their nurses (just speaking from other places Ive been). They really want their nurses to be critical thinkers, quick on your feet, independent. It is a regional facility, so we have 23weekers to 6mo there with trachs, echmo, surgeries including cardiac, bowel, etc. I really liked having all the specialties in one place. The docs are super smart with a fun loving spirit (I thought). [PM for name] is the nurse manager, cant say enough about how great she is... she has been in at 2am when we were drowning some nights, she really helps out the nurses. The staff are super cool, with a laid back attitude but very smart. I cant remember much about your transports, our teams never really talked about the other facilities that I remember. Depending on your level of NICU, UVA would probably be a step up! I definitely recommend it! Good luck!

I do hope the job is going well there....do they use PCT's there?
