Is it true that you will not get hired if you have bad credit as a nurse or any health profession? I heard this somewhere and was wondering if it is true.

Actually they usually will hire and garnish your wages until you have settled those outstanding debts. In adition they will make you take a higher patient load since no one else will probably hire you. I also know one nurse that had to give up her first unborn child to the hospital administrator until the debts were settled.

I don't know of any hospital that has ever checked my credit before hiring me. If you read the fine print on the application before signing it, it will say if you are giving them permission to obtain credit history.

The only employer that I know ran a credit report was back in my banking days.

However, the Board of Nursing for your state will check your criminal history before issuing your license. If you have any felony convictions, that may prevent you from obtaining licensure. In most cases, they will ask for the circumstances around the conviction, and make a decison based on this. Whatever you do, don't lie about it. They will check into it. If you are worried about it, you may contact the board before investing your time and money in nursing school.

I hope this helped. Good Luck.

Yes, yes, that's absolutely true. They don't care about your nursing skills, but they do check your credit report!:p ;)

Some employers do check credit as a way to try and determine a person's level of responsibility. It is quite common.

and others don't (i suspect due to the nsg shortage). those who do...however...do so based on moral character. to some employers...if one can run up (usually credit card) bills, then one should be in the position to pay said debt. it's one thing to have been working a viable job & then find yourself laid-off for six months to a year or more...be disabled from an injury...or have outstanding hospital & or student loan expenses...and another thing to carelessly rack-up credit card debt. that shows poor character, self control, & mistrust.

sooooooooo...i suggest that if you have outstanding debt & are in a position to pay said debt off....please do so before things get way out of hand. today...banks are becoming smart! they know your debt can only stay on your credit report for seven years...but alas...they've done the unthinkable & that's to sell your debt off to other credit agencies who'll keep your debt on going! they can hold on to your debt for six years & eleven months & can & do sell your debt to another agency who will re-list your original debt (which keeps getting higher mind you with every transaction between agencies) for another seven years & the cycle can literally go on & on :uhoh3: !!!! so now...you've got this original debt of say $200.00 that you thought was going to fall-off in a month only to find out that you not only still have it...but it has grown almost doubled & in some cases...tripled in fees to $900.00 & climbing.

hope this helps you ~ cheers!
