GED Info

Hi ALL

How one can join a nursing school after having his /her GED.

GED result does not have a GPA.

Can anyone guide us on this, How you can join a nursing program after having you GED.

Does percentage in GED matters or only passing of GED is enough.

Does nursing schools discourage GED holders.

What else a GED holder can do to make his chances better to get into a nursing program

Only the school can tell you their requirements.

In my own situation I had barely made it out of High School. I was a true BonJovi loving child of the 80s and had 100 things I would have rather done than sit in class all day!!!

Even though I had an actual high school diploma my GPA was embarrassing and I never took an SAT. The 1st semester of college I had to take 2 no credit prep classes, basic math and reading just to get up to college level. Once I was at college level then my college GPA got me into the Nursing program.

I would love to someday have one of my former High School teachers as a patient. They would never believe it, but I was able to graduate college with honors!!!

Best of luck

I would suggest taking general college classes that you are going to need anyway, English, history, your basic liberal arts classes. Do your very best to get all A's. Find out what nursing pre reqs are required in your area, and take them, i.e. chem, biology, math. Once you have established yourself as a good student with a decent GPA, high school won't matter.

Many GED recipients have gone on to earn degrees in nursing. As far as nursing programs are concerned, the college grade point average is far more important than the GED. In other words, a GED recipient who earned extremely good grades in all college prerequisite classes will have a better chance of getting admitted into a nursing program than someone with a high school diploma who performed poorly in the prereqs.

Remember this: a high school diploma and a GED are equal, because they are both indicative of completion of secondary education in the US.

I did it and you can too!

Don't be scared and wait years like I did. Just go talk to the school. THey will tell you their requirements and what hoops you need to jump thru. If they tell you need some HS classes, ask if you can take them at the college level, they are essentially the same classes, just in a shorter time frame. Don't let them talk you out of it as I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT- IF I CAN, ANYONE CAN!

I got my GED in 87, just after my twins were born and a few weeks before I would have graduated. I finally found the moxie to go back to school a few years ago.

I am about to graduate with my ADN and just got my NLN diagnostic rediness test performance back and scored in the 95th percentile nationally!

In the Comprehensive Psych Nursing exam I scored in the 96th percentile against BSN students so I know I am pretty good shape for the NCLEX.

It hasn't all been easy but I want to encourage anyone and everyone- if this is their dream, GO DO IT!!
