I was working in a LTC facility that had a chapel. We couldn't find one of our female residents so started looking through out the facility. I finally found her setting naked in the second row of the chapel. I said to her "Addie what are you doing in here?" and she told me "I am waiting on the priest."

I said to her "but Addie your naked" and she told me "he won't notice I'm setting in the second row."

This same resident went to her grandson's wedding. After the service the church called and wanted to know if "Addie" was missing her teeth? Yes, they were told, where did you find them? She had put them in the collection plate.

Bless her heart.:heartbeat

I had to resurrect this thread and chime in.

Ok imagine it's holiday time. A cute little giggly resident with advanced dementia. Nurses noticed she was happily mumbling and chewing something -- went to check it out. She was holding one of those red round GLASS christmas ornaments (from the holiday tree) in her hand and chewing on the fragments! Best we can figure, she saw the ornament and thought it was an apple, picked it off the tree and took a bite! Luckily there were no cuts, the MD was called and she was monitored and ended up being fine.

No more glass ornaments though!

Specializes in tele, oncology.

We have an ALF/LTC sister facility attached to our hospital (via about eighteen miles of hallways) which caters to nuns (Catholic hospital system). So we tend to get a lot of retired Sisters to care for. I had one I was caring for one night with dementia, in her late 90's, who insisted on sitting in a chair in the doorway to her room. I kept trying to get her to go back to bed to rest, as she had gone for days with nothing but catnaps. She proceeded to tell me "Dear, I'm waiting for the carpenter. I need stronger rulers for all those unruly children I teach." We were all wondering if death was imminent since she was waiting for "the carpenter"...

That needs to be a title to a song... "waiting for the carpenter" :-)

I think caring for demented nuns & priests would be incredibly interesting!

I worked 10 years off and on in an Alzheimer's Unit...man, I could tell you some really funny things...

Was working night shift and heard a huge bang...we rushed into the room and noticed one of the female residents had taken the lid off the back of the toilet...we asked what she was doing? Answer: feeding the goldfish.

Same female resident: missing teeth....found? In the back of the toilet.

Took care of a preacher's wife...she cussed a blue streak whenever we had to change her clothing or shower her. We were all s***-a**'s and she always had to use the s******, or the outhouse. We used to joke that she had saved it all up over the years, LOL.

I've got more I can post, but as you can see the time, my sleep meds are now kicking in....I swear I take more meds than half my residents!

Blessings, Michelle
