Hi, I am preparing to enter the nursing program in spring 2008 and I was wondering did anyone work while in nursing school; if you did how many hours did you work, and if you didnt how did you make it financially without working, loans etc?

Hi brandi,
I graduated in Dec with my BSN, and I worked throughout the entire program. I would work a maximum of 20 hours per week, some weeks as little as 8 hours (for tests, projects, etc). I was however, lucky enough to work for an employer who let me off as often as i needed, and actually encouraged me to take off. I know that this is not the case for many people. This helped maintain my simple lifestyle. On those weeks with only 8 hours of work, i simply lived on ramen noodles and saltine crackers:uhoh3:. Not healthy, but what i had to do to survive. So, working while in nursing school is do-able, but an understanding employer is a HUGE help. Also, remember not to over do-it!

Hi! I am currently in nursing school getting my BSN and have found that many hospitals offer programs for student nurses after finishing their first semester. These give you experience, money, and flexibility. All that I am required to work is 8 hours every two weeks and they understand if I have to call in because of school. This may be the way for you to go. I have found that hospitals are very willing to please nursing students (due to the shortage) so they will work with you. But as long as you prioritize working and going to nursing school is possible.
Good luck and study hard!
