Foot in the door...

So, I was hired as a sitter in the float pool at the hospital I eventually want to work at as an RN (I am in my last semester of school). This gave me priveleges to check out the internal postings, so I applied to a nurse intern position. Got the offer, after working only 3 shifts on the sitter position. Emailed my boss out of courtesy; he said "congrats" and agreed that the intern position would clearly be more conducive to my goals.

I took the sitter position as a "foot in the door", even though I didn't really want to do it...I guess it worked! I have no previous healthcare experience, so I really just wanted to prove myself(?), I guess. Now I can do the intern thing through the summer while in school (they only require 1 shift/week, more if you want it), and hopefully, it will lead to a job later. With the market like it is now, I want to do everything I can to promote myself...

No advice needed...just wanted to share my story. Hopefully this will lead to something greater in the future!

Congrats- great story! I have no medical experience and I am in my final semester. I am scared that I won't find anything- as I haven't any luck finding a PCT or dietary aide job!

Have you checked with you local Nursing Homes or Assistant Living places if there are any where u at?

That is the difference between wanting something to happen and MAKING it happen

What is a "sitter"?

A sitter is someone who stays with a patient 1:1 or constant observation for safety reasons like falls, confused elderly patient pulling out their lines or suicide risk.
