FNP or PNP

I debated PNP vs FNP as well. My experience as an RN is primarily peds, but I didn't want to limit myself. Ultimately I decided to get an FNP for the increased marketability. Also, if I really decide later on I want more peds training I can get a post master's certificate.

I'm not an FNP or PNP; I'm enrolled in an ACNP program. I too was cautioned against an ACNP program and encouraged to enter a FNP program so I would not limit myself. I don't agree with that. I do not enjoy primary care but I love caring for critically ill patients. What good would it do me to be able to find a job in primary care if I know that I don't care for it? I say go for your passion. Like Oprah says, "Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life."

i agree with the above poster....if you really want to work in peds, go for the pnp because a practice would hire one probably over an FNP with the same amount of experience or lack there of. Being more of a specialist, i think, gives you much more confidence in the care you are delivering to your patients. The learning curve also won't be as significant either. Yes, there is an option for post masters, but do what you wanna do first, you can always go back for a FNP as well. Hope this helps!

I debated the same thing b/c of the marketability of FNP. But in the end i chose PNP. (one more year to go!) My background is peds peds peds. I love kids and teens. And through being a PNP i will become an expert in my field. I do not like working with adults and adult health problems so why do FNP if i do not want to do adults and geriatrics? and like others said one can do a post masters later which wont take much time at all.
