does anyone in travel nursing just fly in for their 3 or 4 shift stretch, fly home for the rest of the week then fly back to wherever they are working for their next stretch?

Usually you may see nurses fly and stay for a few weeks of work, but if it required that you flew because of distance, then to fly home each week does not make much sense for you to be a travel nurse in the first place. Would be much more advantageous to just do per diem assignments in your area.
And if flying home each week, then you do not get the per diems or the benefit of the tax free housing stipend as you are not away from home for the week, so you will have more of your income taxed.
