Floor to LTC

Hi, All,

I am thinking about changing jobs from a geropsych unit to LTC (night shift -- that's what I do now). How many of you did that and liked it? Didn't like it? I will appreciate anything you can tell me.

In LTC your going to get to know your patients because they will be at the LTC facility all of the time. Your patients are actually residents of that facility, it is there home and you need to remember that when your talking to them and working with them. In LTC you are helping the residents doing the ADLs (activities of daily living) and usually the residents have a routine down. Be prepared to get your hands dirty, LTC is rarely a clean and easy job and it can be killer on the back.

Not all residents in a skilled facility are there for ever. If you work in a place with a subacute/ short term floor you will be busy with IVs and wound vacs and assessments and a multitude of other things. AND...plenty of patients who could use the expertise of a geri-psych nurse!
