First Year needs help!!

I have been asked to find and record definitions for several different terms. Alot of them are ok because we have been taught it or at least heard of it but there are a few that I just can't seem to find. Is there anyone that can help me? This is my list: -

Stock Medicines

Prescription Only Medicines (PoM)

GSL's

Proprietary and Non-proprietary names of Medicines

Formulary and Non-Formulary Pharmaceutical preparations'

BANs

rINNs

Parental Route of Administration

Enteral Route od Administration

If you could help with any of these it would be much appreciated. Thanks. xx

Formulary is what is normally carried by the hospital's pharmacy. For instance, a hospital may use Prilosec over other medications that do the same thing, so when one of those other meds is prescribed, the pharmacy will automatically substitute Prilosec. This has to do with contracts with the pharmaceutical companies, I believe. Parenteral administration is when a med is given through an IV, such as with Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Enteral administration is when a med is given via the digestive tract (PO, g tube, etc.).

Thank you very much.xx

It's apparent that you're a first year nursing student and not a first year working nurse. I'm going to move your thread to the Nursing Student Assistance forum for more appropriate attention.

Stock Medicines - a supply of presciption and non-presciption drugs most commonly in use by a nursing unit or facility

Prescription Only Medicines (PoM) - medications that require a physician, dentist or veterinary presciption in order to be dispensed

GSL's -

Proprietary and Non-proprietary names of Medicines - proprietary names are the trade or brand names of a drug owned exclusively by the company that developed and possesses the legal patent of a medication; the non-proprietary name of the drug is its shortened chemical name, often the generic name

Formulary and Non-Formulary Pharmaceutical preparations - a formulary is a list of specified medications that an organization has decided that it will stock and dispense; non-formulary preparations are medications not included on the formulary list

BANs

INNs - International Nonproprietary Names

Parental Route of Administration - any route of administration that does not involve the GI tract

Enteral Route of Administration - medication administered and absorbed through the intestines
